Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Speaking of which they played it on Spike TV last night. For some reason the crew kept changing uniform colours throughout the movie, I lost track of what colour represents what.

Here is Spike's site with info on the color of the unis from TMP. His listing of colors is based on Fletcher's intentions; however, the producers of that film didn't necessarily follow Fletcher's scheme to the letter.

The example is Ilia, who should've worn the light beige of a bridge officer and not the command grey like Kirk, Decker and Spock. Of course, she probably looked horrendous in that color and better in the grey. It also helped highlight her as the "guest hottie" in the movie and seperated her from Chekov, Sulu and Uhura.

Here is a link to the insigna colors:

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ That is a great link and much better than anything else I've ever seen trying to explain the TMP uniform colour coding and insignia. Thanks for posting it. It clearly shows that there was a logic to the TMP system, but it was not readily apparent in the film itself because they didn't follow it strictly and they had too many alternate forms. Also the palettes selected, while perhaps realistic, simply lacked any interesting visual stimulous. In fact they look drab even if realistically so. I've seen the TMP uniforms up close on display and they are nicely detailed and beautiful designs, but you don't easily see that due to the drab palettes that had been chosen. Also the fabric used, particularly in the lower parts on the jumpsuits and the trousers, were too lightweight looking and too close fitting. They look fine in illustrations here, but they didn't look that way on the actors due to how they were tailored I think. I also think part of what happened is that they seemed to be extrapolating to some extent from the original TOS designs yet also tried for something a little dressier or crisper looking and lost that casual everyday look of TOS.

I somehow how doubt that a hypothetical series called Star Trek: New Era was rerun on Spike TV the other night. :D

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

I was referring to the film!

And then there was Scotty in a blue uniform at one point in the movie and I like gave up trying to make sense of it

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ Sorry. I thought perhaps you had missed my tweaking of the opening title.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

I liked that picture of the Enterprise approaching Babylon 5 so much I made it my decktop wallpaper.

Unfortunately, when blown up to the proper size (I'm running a 21" monitor, with the resolution at 1600x1200), it got pretty grainy, so I went back and cooked up my own version. I had the same image of the station, but not quite a same picture of the ship (just a few frames earlier), so I had to change the perspective a tad).

Whatcha think?

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ Beautiful. I like it. Good work, CRA.

Sorry about the low resolution of my original attempt. Some of the pics I post here are quick efforts to get the idea accross and thus I keep the pics small also to keep my bandwith down. Down the road I'll be making some larger versions to be seen as part of my website.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

That's a nice job. Although even with a clearer picture I'm still not sure I recognize the other ship.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

OK, since you asked so nicely then. "I'm only joking.". Now let's just proceed by pretending I don't know. Was it a movie? I don't go to the movies as much as I used to.

Here are the two elements, separated:

Now, which one do you not recognize?

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ Jesus! I recognize the Babylon 5 station, but just what the hell is that freaky looking thing in the bottom image? I've never seen anything like it.

Kinda cool though. :D

Please be advised that this image of the U.S.S. Enterprise is not appropriate for Star Trek's 8:00 PM time slot. The spread nacelles, stretching upward, toward and to either side of the viewer, is too sexually suggestive.

Please replace this image with a more family-friendly one.

Thank you for your cooperation.

^^

Then I guess that dampens this next announcement.

"Coming this fall Monday September 6th at 9pm on NBC.."

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ :)

Wow! if it actually debuts two days later on Wednesday September 8th then I'll be like a pig in shit. Star Trek: New Era at 9pm followed by Law & Order at 10pm. Fantastic!

:D
