Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

This is essentially a throwaway shot to get a sense of what it could have looked like. My verdict is that while this particular effort is a little crude, quick and dirty I rather like the concept. TOS should have had a version of "The Cage" field jackets. They could have had a little more detail and more shaped tailoring and should have made them more a royal blue than grey. IMO I think they would have looked rather sharp.

I'd avoid royal blue--move slightly any into the realm of midnight blue. Royal blue is just too bright, and there is enough brightness in TOS without having these unicolor bright jackets.

And then there is this

Either theres more than just star streaks added to that scene, or its cold in that room.

Or shes really excited about meeting Kirk.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

I did not understand why they didn't use the jackets in "The Enemy Within"

I like the window, but wasn't Kirk's qzarters intended to be in the front of the vessel?? (At least according to FJ's deck plans :D )

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Royal blue needn't be bright, but I did mean to suggest something of a reasonably deep shade. Midnight blue strikes me as perhaps somewhat too dark.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

I've considered a window before, but the angle of the wall on the left is wrong in that it isn't severe enough to match that of the saucer rim unlike the briefing room set. Also I'd hesitated putting the Commanding Officers cabin anywhere near a more vulnerable part of the ship, particularly in light of having the tech to create the illusion of a wall-sized window with some form of projection technology.

New! Project -O-Photoshop! Add windows anywhere! Now with close curtain technology!

A tip-of-the-hat to a '50s science fiction classic, Forbidden Planet. :)
That is so cool! I desperately want to hit "play" and see what unfolds, Warped9 :D

Yeah, and the only gripe i have about that image is that that is one small-arse window
by doing that, you downscale the entire ship by about 40% as all the windows are the same size on that miniature.

And the briefing room agle, thats the exact same reason i put a window in there, that image is very early on in the thread, i think page 2, people.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Sometimes re-envisioning a scene requires only a modicum of tweaking. Here's my take on our first view of the Botany Bay. Here it looks more truly adrift and directionless and damage is evident at the aft end.

This one is rather more grandiose...

And the Woden automated freighter in "The Ultimate Computer" shouldn't have been just a simple reuse of the Botany Bay, but something more original. This serves to illustrate my point although I'd rather have had something else...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

You know I was just going over this thread and I think I greatly underestimated it. I had initially envisioned perhaps a couple of dozen images I'd post here, but so far I've posted somewhere in excess of six dozen images and with definitely more to come.

I hope I'm not boring anyone...

Only when you wait so long between posting ;)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Those high ceilings were a little hard to believe, and it would have been nice if some more variety of colour could have been employed to depict different decks and using colour to make the ship somewhat less sterile for voyages of extended duration. Decks would have been padded and/or carpeted to be easier on the legs and coloured differently on different decks: varied shades of green and earth tones to evoke unconcious evolutionary memory of walking on Earth. Similarly the ceilings could have been softly lit and ceiling colour could have been done in shades of blue to stimulate the idea of open sky overhead. We know the ship supposedly had day and night cycles where the lighting levels would vary, although perhaps less so in vital operational areas such as the bridge and engineering for example. And those more functional areas could also have the more familiar red (or yellow or green) structural members overhead.

This made me think of what Star Trek would've been like if Chekov was a Klinger type character (from M*A*S*H).

Chekov comes into the room and Kirk looks up from his conversation with McCoy, "Chekov, I told you once, I'll say it again, you're not going to get a Section ."

:D

Ray, I suggest you not overdo the swirly purple background gas. It's attractive, but I suppose it's probably not so common.

I don't know; I get swirly purple gas quite often.

I like the idea of the different colors to mark the various decks.

I also think--and I know this is revisionist--that muting the colors in TOS might not be such a bad idea. Nothing drastic--just something to make it look a bit more like "The Cage" and thus make it a natural precursor to TMP.

If you're referring to the overhead corridor translucent panels that's an effect of changing the red to a soft blue because the colour seems to be reflected in the panels.

A rarely seen class of starship and a tip-of-the hat to Masao as well as Franz Joseph...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Not too keen on the earth colours there, Warped, their ok, but id rather see them on the Rec Deck locations as it conveys earth. For every day ship operations, id just keep the carpeted floors different colours, not to 'in your face' though.

Funny, this came up a few pages ago with my 'Kirks early apartment' scenario i had introduced, i changed the support beams from the familiar red to a blue to convey a different set and stuck San Francisco in there for an enirely different location in the galaxy.

Warped came up with the idea of deck colours, i had been meaning to follow this conversation on with deck colours changed, i changed on deck colour, my Recreation Deck manipulation to a yellow, rather than the red to make officers feel a little more relaxed without harsh colours. However, I decided to keep important areas such as the bridge, engine room etc red to convey importance.

I must admit though, i did change the key bridge colours to see the difference it would make to the set. I took caps from 'The ultimate computer' and changed the commodores ship, forget the name, to a light blue, the Enterprise remained red etc etc.
Doing that, it gives different ships their own character.
