Never seen a Babylon 5 DVD so cheap

That sounds more like the US version. I think there was a R2 version of the movie set without commentaries because of some dispute over WB editing their content. I don't really recall the details now.
Theoretically one of the commentaries was supposed to be pulled from the next pressing of the Crusade DVDs, but I'm not sure that's happened yet.

I thought they pulled one of the commentaries at the start due to WB interference with what JMS said.

Or was that a documentary?

WB edited one of JMS' Crusade commentaries telling what happened to Crusade and spliced in part of his on-camera interview instead. JMS said that when he objected, WB agreed to remove the commentary from all future pressings of Crusade. Like ATimson, I'm not sure if that ever happened.

Just watching this show for the first time now. (I bet a friend if they watched new BSG I'd watch this.)

It's pretty good. But it is atrocious on production values. The season 1 sets where awful, and the special effects... ugh, early CGI is horrible, lol.

But oh well. If you watch (or don't watch) a show because of crap SFX, you're pretty silly. Space: Above and Beyond is another good show which used early CGI effects and it's great.

I've enjoyed it thus far, in season 4 now. Sinclair will always be the Captain though; Sheridan just doesn't muster IMHO. Sad to find out the actor who played Sinclair was ill (schizophrenic, I think?) and died last year. :(

All those old DS9 VS B5 arguments suddenly make sense to me now! lol

A fair amount of that ugliness is actually a result of the DVD transfer, but still, yeah the early stuff is a bit ropey. With good reason though; this was the first time *anyone* had ever done anything like this and they were essentially developing the technology as they went and for not a lot of money. Even by the end of season one there's a noticeable improvement and by season 4 it's like a whole different show technologically.

The show was well ahead of its time in that it was shot with 16:9 in mind as the TV aspect ratio of the future. Just think how great TNG and DS9 would be now on DVD and blu-ray if they had that sort of forethought.

In as much as they're not making new episodes, or selling licensed merchandise, yes. It's about as dead as BSG, Stargate and Star Trek (no, the JJ'verse is not Star Trek.)

In case anyone is wondering, the gap has been filled. :)

Now I just have to get Crusade, the TV Movie Collection, Legend of the Rangers and The Lost Tales to complete the set.

Though I really wish The Lost Tales hadn't been made.

Didn't say I didn't like it. Just that it's not Star Trek. ;)

I am of two minds about TLT. On the one hand, yeah, it was painfully cheap (which says something for a B5 production!) but on the other hand at least the segment with Sheridan felt like it was part of the show's mythos, which sadly is more than one can say for LotR.

Though I really wish The Lost Tales hadn't been made.

Not sure why that is.

I really liked the one Lost Tales disk we got but even if I hadn't, the opening sequence would have justified its existence completely.

Without the original sets, proper cast and decent storylines it didn't feel like B5. The corridor shots felt wrong, and the station just appeared to be 'empty', though granted you could argue that merely foreshadowed the abandonment the station felt in it's later years...

The title of the film would seem to disprove such a silly assertion.
That whole "a rose by any other name" thing works both ways. :p

That wouldn't be my interpretation, but it works as a convenient lie. ;)

Really though, the emptiness was accounted for in the story; everyone was avoiding that part of the station because of the weirdness and the awful smell...though I suppose by that logic it should have been swarming with pak'ma'ra.

Now, now...just because something smells awful doesn't mean it smells like carrion. Sulfer, other gases, sauerkraut... :p ...could be lots of smells.

Whatever. Your childish insistence that the licenced continuation of the franchise isn't "Star Trek" solely because you don't like it has not and will never chance the fact that they are indeed actual, canon presentations of the continued Star Trek pantheon. I can certainly understand not liking it if it's not to your taste, but that's not what you're doing. You're just coming across as petulant and vacuous.

Childish? Mate, I was joking. Relax a little. Also, I'm not the one posting animated gifs in lieu of a cogent or witty response.

Which raises the question; what smell is so bad that even the pak'ma'ra give it a wide berth? Anchovies? Live spoo? Dirty Vorlon socks?...Or maybe anything plant related? I mean they don't look like they're big on salads... ;)

One wonders if those facial tentacles have any equivalent to our olfactory equipment. If so, if size denotes sensitivity, it's possible that what they find to be a foul stench is beyond our ability to detect. Or...they don't eat fish, right? Maybe those smell bad to them.
