Jinn-You're a solid go to, at least from my perspective, for getting newer people, started somewhere within the vast literverse!
More importantly, kudos to you for not dropping down to 'PlutoDawns' level. It goes to show, not how ignorant and arrogant the above mentioned individual is, but more importantly, how impressive your character is!!

Aw, thank you Truth be told, I also enjoy talking, ehm writinf about what to read first, good jumping on points, what books are good and stuff like that. And of course, as trampledamage said, the question of good philosophical Trek books is a fair one. After google searching some of the people you mentioned and seeing that you mentioned that you liked the ENT episodes with Surak you might want to read the Vulcan's Soul books, the first of which deals with Surak during his quest to "wage peace" on Vulan.
