Neuromancer movie in the works...no really...

There are at least 2 versions since 2006 that have been called the Neuromancer movie, but the one announced in 2010 finally got funding in late July 2011. It has a $60 million budget and will be independent...it seems its trying to consciously avoid the big budget Hollywood dumbing down. For what it's worth, Gibson loves the screenplay:

There is also a June interview with the director:

Didn't he write the screenplay for Johnny Nmemonic?

I hope this comes out, and meets expectations. Though I feel they missed the boat on this one by not making it around the same time as JM. Seeing Cyberspace in it's full CGI glory would have been awesome in 1994, and those were the best scenes from JM. However in 2011 will that really impress anybody?

Further, where Neuromancer was a highly original in 1994, Cyberpunk is almost cliche these days. Will the tag line of the movie be We aren't ripping off The Matrix. Really!

He sure did, so take it with a grain of salt. I don't think his stream of consciousness style from his earlier works translates well to script form though.

Originators often get the reputation of being copycats after the movie adaptations reach popular consciousness years later. This doesn't mean anything to me, since I read the original very early on. I don't really care what the public thinks.

Cyberspace isn't going away, and it hasn't reached it's potential yet, as the current hype over transhumanism demonstrates. It has lots of room to grow, and we may not have seen the ultimate representation of it yet..but it is a shame so many movies have tried their hand at the original description from the novel. As with most SF ideas, many of which have been used dozens of times, its not the idea but how it's represented that's of interest.

I like Vicenzo Natali to a point.

And by 'a point', I mean 'I liked Cube.' It's entirely possible he's done other things since then that are good that I haven't seen, but then again.

Don't know what he'll do with Neuromancer but I guess I'll find out.

Wouldn't discount biopunk as far as transhumanism goes. I read The Windup Girl over the summer, was very good.

I'll believe the "avoiding the Hollywood big-budget dumbing down" part when I see it. :rommie:

Meh, I never thought Neuromancer was the best of that genre or the most cinamatic.

Wake me up when Michael Bay signs on to direct an Aaron Sorkin adaptation of Snow Crash.

Me neither. Of the three Cyberspace books, I thought Mona Lisa Overdrive was by far the best, if for no other reason than it basically stars the Molly character from Neuromancer. Gibson overall though is great at crafting worlds, but fails to write compelling plots that build into any sort of climax.

I recently read Zero History, more out of loyalty to Gibson than anything. It was an incredibly disappointing ending to an incredibly disappointing trilogy. I don't care how much praise it got for being "meta" by including real Google searches and Twitter, and being "cool" by having the word iMac in every other paragraph. It was boring!

Sadly enough, it probably should be. Perhaps moviegoers should be handed a cheat sheet explaining that 1984 preceded 1999.

( Ideally, it would also be common knowledge that The Matrix ripped off the classic Doctor Who episode The Deadly Assassin, which featured... you know... the Matrix. )

I've enjoyed just about everything Vincenzo Natali has done (I haven't seen Splice yet, though), so I'm a little excited about the prospects for this film. I believe it when I see it, though.

I never read Neuromancer, but I'd really love a Snow Crash movie. If they do it right, the first scene would be worth the price of admission alone.

There are some really good cyberpunk movies out there. Anyone remember The Lawnmower Man? Great movie, though a little weird, and that's the problem with these movies. They hedge on being tacky. The 13th floor is another good one.
