Netflix Presents: Orange is the New Black

Does it seem like season two is even more lesbianism obsessed than season one?

I read that one of the biggest differences between the book and the show is that the book doesn't have nearly as much lesbianism. There's nothing wrong with having lesbian stories, but the constant presence of it that had nothing to do with the author's real experiences is starting to feel exploitative and pandery.

That was an issue I had with the second season, and on the heels of Last week's Orphan Black (The one about the trans-clone), I was wondering if the "gay agenda" was being forced down my face with these shows. It's one thing to do it with care. It's another for it to feel exploitative and have it be "kewl". Having too much of it does come across more as saying "look at us, we're gay" and less of "we're in a realistic relationship".

Well, the show creator is quoted as saying "I love graphic sex, the more sex the better." That kind of attitude in making a TV show annoys me, because it really is just nudity for nudity's sake, even when it may not be contributing to the actual plot or character development. I don't mind nudity and sex in shows, when it fits with what you would expect from the situation (for example obviously a couple will be nude around each other), but I did feel that season 2 of Orange is the New Black went a little past that, like they were trying too hard to fit more lesbian sex scenes in.

Anyway, besides that, I really enjoyed the season. I actually preferred this finale over the season 1 finale, mostly because it was more satisfying and wrapped things up nicely. When you have to wait a year for new episodes, you don't exactly want to end on a cliffhanger. At least I don't. But, we do still have some unfinished business with certain characters, so there are things to look forward to next season.

By the way, is anyone really loving Kate Mulgrew in this? As a Voyager fan I'm sure I'm biased, but I really love the Red character and I'm glad that we got so much of her this season.

I agree about the lesbian sex this season being unbalanced. We definitely need next season to have a goodly amount of gay male sex to make up for it. It's just hard to figure out who it will be, I mean there are not a lot of males and NO ONE wants to see Pornstache having sex. But Healey, he's that classic homophobe of a certain age that just might want some hot young guard on his knees (under the desk? YES) and I am thinking that is what we will get in season 3.

Though personally I'd rather see the maintenance dude, who is totally cute, balancing the lesbian sex out in some experimental shenanigans. But not with Healey.

OH and we could always go the Larry gets Revenge Gay Sex route.. I mean sure it may seem like revenge to be with Polly but I think he has to go gay and throw that in Piper's face to really feel like he's not been dumped for a woman. That's the kind of thing that would bother Larry.

Sex that contributes for the story = Good.
Sex that is just there for the sake of titillating the audience = Bad.

I did get some amusement from the 'Contest', but around that time we also see everybody's backstory revolving around lesbian sex and lots of straight characters considering hooking up with their buddies. "Close your eyes and open your mouth". Really, you needed to make her think for a second Taystee wanted to make out with her to have her reveal the tobacco scam?

Full disclosure, I'm only about six episodes into the season at this point so I don't know if it gets worse or better later.

just finished season2. at the end of the finale I clapped my hands loudly.

I thought S2 was way better than S1. No dud episodes imo.
The last minutes of the finale were really great.

Looking forward to S3.

Totally agree (Based on first six episodes) season two is better than season one.

A lot of it I think is because Piper is treated as one character among many rather than 'THE character'.

I liked the lesbian scenes, as far i don't have to see something with Boo it's all right
Boo scares me, i would not like to meet her in the dark.

Obvious netflex want's to please male heterosexuals, and they like girls having sex.
Woman like the show for other reasons, strong females ... they go more for love storys like Alex/Piper than for plain sex.

Also in a show with mostly woman (inmates) there are little possiblilities of hetero pairings.

I would love to see Healey fall in love with a guy because he has to learn his lesson. :guffaw:

The only two things I dont want to see
a) excessive violence, as we saw in season 2, and
b) rape, which from the guards i would expect only from pornstace, if he finds out that Daya was a set up he might hate woman in general

As a fan of Kate i did not like the Season 2.
I want to see her in a powerful position, not struggling and beeing beaten up twice.
I want to see a love story with her, male or female, however.
Love and sex in older age is also a topic worth to give voice.

Red should not be limited to rule and cook, she deserves also at least a vital sex life. Only show her motherhood side for her girls is not enough for me, especially as we saw on voyager nearly nothing erotic of her. Just the one Kiss with Kashyk :scream:

My special wish would be: the warden (played by John de Lancie or some voyager cast member) falls for Red, gives her the kitchen back and serves her in every way

Yes, i am a pervert, i want to see more

No dud episodes imo.

I had to think to remember some of those lesbian scenes and now I'm thinking... Yeah, I liked that stuff between Piper and Alex at home but it was the girl that came in and startled Piper that really made it memorable.

In other news, Mary Steenburgen will be in season 3. Read on.

John de Lancie as the warden would be awesome, not just because of the Trek connection but because he's friends with Kate Mulgrew. Plus, he can handle the same brand of humor we've gotten from the rest of the prison staff.

contest:
Piper is more than a 3 Pointer
how many points would have been Red ?

chicken:
should get a bigger part, before it finally ends up in Reds kitchen, but all Girls refuse to kill it, so it stays as a pet

Piper is more than a 3 Pointer

Since she is tentatively the mother figure to both contestants, she would be a minus 30 based on the ick factor alone.

Now... if the game was opened up to people from other families, then we're looking at a plus 30.

This is the grreatest idea EVER.

Ahhhh, just when Jeri Ryan was about to cave and join Litchfield as the newest guard to replace Pornstache. ;)

I have to disagree that sex appeal for the sake of sex appeal is a good thing. As a male hetero, if I want to be titillated, I'll watch porn. I watch shows like Orange Is The New Black for good characterization, and having characters seem like they're acting out of character to increase the sex appeal compromises that.

I'm glad Game of Thrones toned the random nudity down at least a little this season.

If the point value is based on difficulty factor I think Red would be a 10.

I like the way V has a Richie Aprile vibe to her, only without the abject grossness of human being.

It was as if a thousand voices cried out in..

GAME OVER HOTTNESS ALL ROUND

tumblr implodes.. melts.. collapses and has a cigarette

facebook shuts down all KM related pages due to the uncontainable surge in sex posts..

teacake develops carpal tunnel from her use of the pause button..

I WILL TAKE THEM BOTH.

As in.. well..

It's getting a bit warm in this thread, maybe we need to open a window.

As for Piper, I was actually fine with that ending. I also liked the symmetry in that Alex pretty much insured Piper Prison at the beginning of the season, and Piper returned the favor.
I must admit I didn't even think about the symmetry (although you're absolutely right about it), rather I was instantly reminded of what happened in the final season of Oz.

After seasons of torture and anguish (and even a fake-out release), Beecher finally gained his freedom. Tragically, Keller was tormented by his love for Beecher and schemed to have him dragged back into jail just so Keller could have him again. Hopefully, we won't get the suicide/framed for murder out of love moment in Orange is the New Black.

My only problem with the ending is..

Alex is my least favorite character, would be quite happy to never see her again. But I bow to fandom, have at it
.
