Netflix or Hulu (or anything else)?

I'll try to throw a few recent shows onto the list:

Family Guy
Doctor Who
Dexter
30 Rock
The Office (U.S.)
This American Life
Californication
Bullshit!
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena
Spartacus: Blood and Sand
The IT Crowd
Bones
Pawn Stars
American Pickers
South Park
Eureka
Monk
Torchwood
Mythbusters
Kyle XY

And there's more, I just can't think of them offhand.
It doesn't help if you're only into less than half of that list.

I also noticed that Netflix doesn't show "webisodes" but Hulu Plus does.
So for fans of shows like nuBSG or Rescue Me, to see those you'd have to go too Hulu.

NuBSG is on Netflix Instant Watch.
Rescue Me is also on Netflix Instant Watch.

As I said, it's not a complete list.

As for watching current episodes online, Netflix doesn't do that... yet.
I beg to differ.
Anything on STARS is instantly streamable after it aires on Netflix.

Once again, I said the "webisodes" of BSG & Rescue Me aren't on Netflix but are on Hulu. I didn't say the actual show wasn't.

Yeah, there are exceptions. "Blue Mountain State" on SpikeTV is streamable on Netflix after new episodes air.

Yeah, Starz play is a part of Netflix. I forgot about that.
Which goes back to my saying it's not a complete list.

Is there a way to See Fringe from the beginning online and not have to get the discs. I've heard many good things about it, and if it's the one show people are begging to be seen (I didn't see an announcement in this forum for people to watch Parks and Recreation, for example) than maybe it is something worth checking out. I just don't have my own Netflix account and it's not avaliable for streaming. I know it's WB owned and they are really against the whole Netflix thing anyway (or so I've heard) so it would be nice if they had their own Streaming service. People go there, you get some commercials, but it's money for the company, and the more people watch and like, the more they might go spend money on the DVDs. It's things like this I wish more companies who don't like Netflix did. If you don't like Netflix, there is such a thing as competitive advantage and it's one of the basic principles on which our economy is run.

Netflix is definitely the better choice for me. I love being able to stream to my TV through the Wii. I am overall fairly satisfied with the selection that Netflix has available. I can also get movies and TV shows on DVD if they aren't available to stream instantly. Oh, and no advertisements. That's a big deal. The way I see it, I prefer to stream older series and seasons through Netflix, and then watch current seasons via Hulu (the free version, not Hulu Plus). Hulu Plus does not currently offer me anything worthy of the price, plus I can't believe that they would continue to force me to watch ads. Screw that.

You can watch them online through Amazon's "Video on Demand" service. It costs about the same as buying the DVDs though...around $30 for an entire season. It appears they have the first three seasons.

Instead of criticizing, I'm going to form this in a form of a question...

Is the Netflix Streaming a bit overrated? I mean it's great and there are many movies and shows to choose from, but it's mostly stuff from 5-10+ years ago? Not a lot of stuff I've found that is current is available for streaming (Like Fringe) and that's a bit of a bummer.

Julie and Julia, Prince of Persia, Hot Tub Time Machine are all newer movies for streaming.

Depends on the show, they have Skins, great show, for viewing and a lot of comedies. They have most of the new Doctor Who besides Planet of the Dead which I never watched, and they used to have!

But for $10 a month you can get the new shows and movies and then watch the streaming.

I'd wait until June to see if Fringe will even get an ending.

Oh yeah... is it just me or is Hulu a lot darker than Netflix? I have a hard time seeing what's going on on Hulu, and with Netflix I never had that issue.

I can't stress this enough, Netflix is awsome. There's been a couple of threads about this. You can always find something you like and it's only going to get better. Lately i've been watching Quantum Leap streaming and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see that show again.

I don't have a menu. I just have several rows of "covers" to scroll through and I press the triangle-button to get the search feature up.
There are as many as 6 different UIs out there, depending on which device you use. The PS3 changed the first week of Feburary from a sleek well organized easy to use UI to a more limited, less intuitive version that seems to be universally despised across the internet. Screenshots of the various apps can be seen here-
The good PS3 app-http://www.techofthehub.com/2011/02/ps3s-new-netflix-interface-step-forward.html, which the Boxee Box just added this past week..

Videos of 4 of the others-http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19362762#post19362762

And a new 6th version-http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19992522#post19992522

In the last link, the poster details how he got his UI to change, but others trying the procedure didn't get an alternate...and the 'Russian Roulette' nature of it may yield a version of the app you don't like. So, take care should you want to try and make a change.

The multiple UIs aside, NF Watch Instantly has been a great value to me. I've gained access to British shows I've never heard of, and others I simply wouldn't have take up space in the disc queue to try out. They have deals with pay tv channels Starz and the newer Epix (owned by Paramount/Viacom, MGM, & Lionsgate) which provides them with more recent theatricals. Warner Bros head Jeff Bewkes has engaged in a hostile, one sided, war of words with Netflix, with the intent of making it harder-and more expensive for NF to acquire recent Time Warner owned programming, seeing the outfit a threat to corporate siblings HBO and T-W Cable. But even with older Waner titles, the NF streaming library still offers tremendous choices...

The most important thing that newcomers should bear in mind is that the streaming service ought not to be considered a substitute for a cable or satellite subscription. There's been some harsh reviews on the web by some bloggers who look at the selection offered and raise their noses at it, expecting Inception and other movies fresh out of theaters. That's not gonna happen as the major studios withhold those for pay per view and VOD, where they get a slice of the rental pie.
Treated as a supplement to whatever you have now, Watch Instant is an affordable addition to your entertainment options. :)

In an unusual development, this site is far better than Netflix's own, it offers box cover views, genre submenus that can be further filtered for tv or movie only, new arrivals and what's about to expire. Give it a look.

I just started watching 30Rock last night. I have made it through 2 seasons already.

Yeah, I think that's about when my changed and, thank you internet, for reaffirming my worries, fears and dis-taste in the "new" design.

Netflix introduced me to 30 Rock as well, and I blew through it so fast it's ridiculous. Damn those 20-minute episodes!

Season 3 is significantly less funny than Seasons 1 and 2, though, so you might slow down. It's not bad. I just found myself not laughing out loud nearly as much as I had been. But then it gets better again with Season 4.

In my practical experience, Netflix is for completed seasons, and Hulu (free version) is for current shows. Supplement with TV.com or Fancast for networks that don't distribute to Hulu, and I can pretty much watch whatever I want whenever I want. Hulu Plus offers almost nothing that isn't available either via Netflix or Hulu free. Its only real advantage is timing, and to me, it's not worth the commercials & unreliable signal quality to pay for Hulu.

Yeah, I just finished watching episode 17 of Season 3 (Cutbacks), and while it was funny, the episodes of this season aren't quite up to par with 1 & 2. Still, this show is very quotable, and I do laugh at least a few times every episode, which is good. :D

Never thought I'd see the series streamed outside of CBS.com.

Netflix wins, majorly excited about the upcoming Trek deal and it has all episodes of 24. All 5 seasons of Babylon 5, I could go on.
