Having both Stewart and Spiner play their doppelgangers would have only reinforced the notion of the TNG movies being totally Picard- and Data-centric, at the expense of all the other characters.

For the record, I don't have any problem with editors.

I have a problem with an inexperienced person from another profession with no admitted knowledge of a franchise being assigned to direct a movie from said franchise.

This isn't a Frakes scenario. He had directed before, and perhaps more importantly, knew the franchise.

I still believe that while Abrams should remain in charge of the feature films, Frakes should be put in charge of the TV series. He always appeared to genuinely like Star Trek and his (and Burton's) behind the camera work was almost always successful. The two of them could do some great work on a miniseries or an animated series.
