Need software advice for photo/collage creation

My parent's 50th anniversary is coming up. I've managed to scan and restore their official (but damaged) wedding photo. I was thinking of doing a photo montage with the wedding photo in the centre (it's oval as it was sliced to fit into a specific frame) and then fit smaller photos around it highlighting the last 50 years of their lives.

I could probably knock something up in Picasa but the only output option is Jpeg, which isn't a road I want to go down if I want to do a (proposed at this stage) A3-sized canvas.

Any advice for something that could help me out and retain a high quality output file? I have access to both a Mac and PC.
 
Photoscape is freeware (and safe) and has a ton of photo editing/drawing options, one of which is called "Page," and allows you to create photo collages from a variety of templates (see below) and save it as jpg, gif, png, bmp, and tiff in whatever size you want. The templates are all squares, but you can center your oval picture in the middle of it and then have a background color of your choice behind it.

It's basically a very strimmed down Photoshop, but it'll do for everything you need it to :)

Excuse me while I go all GNU RAGE! for a moment and argue, in the right hands, GIMP is actually more powerful than Photoshop. Funny thing about ones and zeroes is math > art every time.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread hijack.
 
Lol... i've got nothing against GIMP or GNU, but while GIMP maybe more powerful than older versions of photoshop, it can't hold a candle to later versions like CS5 or CS6, especially with their 3D and framerate expansions...

Photoshop Elements can handle basic photo stuff very nicely as well. But Photoshop is the ultimate tool. GIMP is just that, a gimp.
 
I do collages like this all the time (I do desktops) and I can't live without PhotoShop. I am not sure if you could get an older version for cheap - but I'd rather have CS4 or whatever than just about any non-Photoshop product.
 
Thanks everyone. I've tried GIMP on and off over the years and I've never really been able to get it.

I have access to an older version of Photoshop (CS3 I think), completely forgot to check it!

Will try Photoscape too.
