need help with Internet/browser/? problems

sorry for the late reply, its been really difficult to get my posts to go through.

I have Windows Vista...

Well there's your problem, hehe

Try this, Start --> Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center. Now, in there, go to Change Adapter Settings (it may look a little different, I'm looking at this from Win7), the goal is to get to your adapter where the Internet is plugged in (it will say "Local Area Connection") Right click on it and click on Disable, this should shut down your Internet connection. Wait a minute, then right click and click Enable, this will re-initialize the adapter. You might need to right click and click Diagnose as well for it to obtain an IP address. After you do all that, try the Internet again.

^well I just tried it, didnt work either.

So does it seem like this is probably a Comcast problem & not something on my end like one of my spamblockers or AVG interfering?
Guess I'll have to call Comcast. I just hope their solution isnt "your modem is broken, buy a new one." Or something equally pointless.

Can you disable your spam blocker and AV and try the Internet again? That will tell you if it is it or not, what spamblocker are you using?

Typically Comcast should provide your hardware modem, so if it is broke, they are responsible for replacing it.

I had the same problem about a year ago and it turned out to be an anti-virus program that I was running (Kaspersky to be exact). It worked fine for about a month and then all of a sudden I couldn't access websites anymore. I tried disabling it completely but it still wouldn't work. Only after completely uninstalling it did it work.

I don't know how much that helps you in this situation, but I hope that you get it worked out soon.

^ well I completely uninstalled Spybot(seems to be pretty useless these days) & just disabled 2 others, AVG & Adaware by using this tip I found online:

Click Start> Run then type msconfig in the box that appears, hit enter, then click the start up tab and uncheck AVG. Restart your computer

but I cant find the other 2 I have, Spywareblaster & Malwarebytes on the list. Though i read while googling that they dont have to be disabled since they are not in the startup menu anyway...

anyway disabling AVG & Adaware didnt change anything either...

or should I just uninstall all of them completely? thats gonna be a pain. I think I'll call Comcast first if I decide to do that. Gosh this is such a pain. -_-

Back when I was still doing ISP support, I would see this VERY frequently. The biggest culprit we had it with was ZoneAlarm.

It may very well not be a problem with your computer, but it is hard to tell without trying another computer on the same cable line.

I've had Vista crap out on me once, it got the point where I couldn't access the Internet at all, I ended up having to reformat and reinstall Vista, then it worked just fine.

That is why we really need to track down if this is a cable modem/internet connection problem, or your computer, we have to isolate which one it is.

Well I just downloaded IE 8 to see if it can solve a problem Ive been having with IE 7 but it hasnt solved it. Ive been having trouble for about a week now: I keep getting "IE cannot display webpage"(white page, light blue text) error messages when I try to visit various sites. Sites I used to have no problem with before, now I have trouble getting the pages to load. They either take very long to load or dont load at all, & I also get the same error message in those side windows that are supposed to play animated banner ads. Im also having problems uploading to sites. I got this other error mesage when I tried to upload something to Deviantart (well I was going to post a jpeg of the message that I copied/pasted into Paint but I cant even get it to upload to Imageshack). The message says, apart from the usual "there was a server error while processing your request" that it might be a problem with my browser privacy controls or firewall- or- it could be a browser extension, virus protector, or adblocker that is interfering with the upload script.

Since Im having trouble uploading I wonder if that might be the problem. Ive had Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, Malawarebytes AMW & AVG since last summer & havent had any trouble with them. The only recent thing Ive changed is Adaware which I updated to the newest version last month. If its one of those causing the problem, then I have no idea what to do to figure out which one it is or how to fix it b/c to be honest I dont really know much about how they work. I just run them & hope they do their job.

i've been having the exact same problem!! i was using Firefox and it stopped working, but IE7 still worked. i tried Chrome and Safari, and they wouldn't work either. then i upgraded to IE8 and now it doesn't work either! i turned off Windows Firewall so that's not the issue. what the crap is going on here??

^I wish there were easy solutions for this. These are the type of technical problems were it really sucks to only have a basic limited knowledge of how computers work.

odd that I just saw a video on yahoo movies without any problems. and I had no problem downloading Firefox or Adobe Flash. But uploading a simple jpeg picture to Deviantart or Imageshack is almost impossible.

I got this error message page while trying to get into my Comcast email account a little earlier :

Connection interrupted
the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
the network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

I googled the phrase "comcast connection to server was reset" & got a lot of different links all offering various solutions. Some involved screwing around with the registry codes which I would like to not mess around with...some have solutions I dont really understand how to go about doing, others only offer solutions if you have wireless or DSL. ( I have a cable modem & Comcast highspeed)

some examples

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95-98-me/316641-connection-server-reset-2.html

there's more but I dont have time time to look through them tonight. Ill also figure out how to disable Malwarebytes & Spywareblaster then.

thanks to everyone who offered tips & help so far especially Brent...you guys are really cool.

Ok, so after this thread i switched over to Firefox 3.5 which I love so far. However, now out of nowhere a few hours ago it stopped remembering my passwords which is extremely annoying.

I know there is a fix out there regarding this where you to the profile folder and delete/rename key3 and signouts.txt but that didn't work for me.

I think my problem is a little different as it remembers the passwords technically but I have to type the name in and hit enter for it to work, which is of course useless really.

Help anyone?

Im sorry, I have no idea, have you tried googling something like "Firefox password forget" to see what results you get? I often find various solutions to my tech problems that way.

BTW, it seems my own problem was related to Comcast. I was set to call them last Tuesady afternoon but it sorted itself out(whatever it was that was wrong) before Iever got around to it. My internet connection/browsing is back to normal. Im glad that I didnt have to hassle with them on the phone. They probably would have told me it was something wrong on my end anyway & who knows what they would have had me waste time doing!

again I want to thank everyone here who offered their help! :)
