Need Help: My hard disk is shrinking

93 vs 100 is the difference between counting gigabytes and billions of bytes.

a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, yet we often use kilo- to mean 1000.
So a megabyte is 1024*1024 = 1048576 bytes (1.048 millions of bytes)
And a gigabyte is 1024*1024*1024 = 1073741824 bytes (1.073 billions of bytes)

See that 93GB * 1.073 = 100GB

93 gigabytes is 100 billion bytes.

Some new words have been invented to clear up that mess: The gibibyte is 2^30 bytes, and the gigabyte is used in the classic metric sense meaning one billion (10^9) bytes. It's not popular nomenclature, so it isn't used consistently. Gigabyte can mean either.

Oh, I understand perfectly how much is a megabyte or a gigabyte. But to say 93 GB = 100 GB doesn't make much sense and only adds to the confusion.

93 GiB == 100GB :)

(SI can get bent, though. I'll always say "KB", "MB", and "GB" even though I mean the power-of-2 variety.)

Just an update: I haven't had any crashes lately (keeping my fingers crossed). As of today, I have 93.5 GB of free space on my C: drive.

Hi, all. I've got a different problem with my PC, but maybe it's related to the issues I was having earlier this month.

I'm currently on Safe Mode. About three hours ago, while playing City of Heroes MMO, my computer just froze up and was non-responsive. So I manually turned it off and turned it back on. I noticed there were these red/green vertical lines running down the screen before the log-in menu appeared. I tried several times (unsuccessfully) to get to my desktop using "Normal" mode or "Last Known Good Configuration." The only way I could get to my desktop was via Safe Mode. I already ran a disk scan, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

EDIT:

Well, crap. I think my computer has reached the end of its life. At this point, I can't even get to the desktop. Either the system freezes up upon startup, or I get the blue screen of death saying Page Fault Error or something. I can't even log in with Safe Mode. I get prompted to insert my Windows install CD and repair the error, but I have to look for the CD, assuming I still have it.

What a shame if this really is the end. When I first custom-ordered it from Dell four years ago, I picked the more advanced features at the time. The PC has served me well all these years despite Vista's unstable nature. *Sigh* I'm not even sure if I can afford a new one.

It's most likely a graphics card failure. Next most likely is ram failure.

Overheating could be the cause of either. It's important to keep computer hardware cool nowadays because it generates enough heat to kill itself.

Do you have another graphics card to try? Perhaps borrowed from a different computer?

I'm not really sure. What I'd like to do first is find my Windows install CD and see if it can fix the error and the crashing. Right now, I can only access the Internet from work or using my smartphone.

Do you have a linux Live-CD? eg ubuntu or knoppix. These are free to download, so you could get them from work if you're permitted to do so.

If you suspect the fault is software in origin, then either of these LiveCDs would allow you to boot your computer without touching your hard disk/windows. You don't even need a hard disk connected to try the LiveCD.

If these fail to boot, that would be strong evidence that your computer has a hardware fault.

I think I have a USB flash drive in my bag somewhere. The Ubuntu site says I can either create a CD or use a USB stick, so I'm going to download it here at work.

I've never tried the usb installer, so to me that seems like a more complicated option (introducing unknown variables). Be sure to enable any 'boot from usb/removable drives' options in bios and ensure it appears before hard disk in the boot order.
