looking for a quote from star trek. I'm not certain which show it's from or what character it is. I think it's either Kirk from TOS or Q from TNG. He is explaining how humans have evolved to the point where they don't need gods anymore or something along those lines. anyone remember?

Are you sure that you aren't confusing this with Worf's line on how the Klingons killed their gods?

Otherwise I think that you are referring to Shakespeare's "what a piece of work is man" monologue that Picard quotes to Q at the end of "All good things.."

I think your combining a couple of lines. Kirk, I think, from Who Mourns From Adonais says something along the lines that we don't need many gods, the we're quite happy with the one we have.

Some possibilities:

TOS's "Who Mourns for Adonais":
KIRK: You know nothing about our kind. You know only our remote ancestors who trembled before your tricks. Your tricks don't frighten us, neither do you. We've come a long way in five thousand years.
APOLLO: I could sweep you out of existence with a wave of my hand and bring you back again. I can give life or death. What else does mankind demand of its gods?
KIRK: Mankind has no need for gods. We find the one quite adequate.

TAS's "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth":
KIRK: Because we have minds, we can't be what you wanted us to be. If we fail or succeed, it has to be our own doing. Intelligent life is too precious a thing to be led by the nose.
KUKULKAN: But you are my children. I hoped I could teach you, help you.
KIRK: You did, long ago, when it was needed most. Our people were children then. Kukulkan, we've grown up now. We don't need you anymore.

NBC Standards and Practices did insist on that "We find the one quite adequate."

What's your point? Why is that so humorous?

-Shawn :borg:

I think it's because Roddenberry was a known atheist and Trek was a vehicle for that agenda. He wanted his world to follow along those lines (and he largely succeeded in TNG's "Who Watches the Watchers?") but back then NBC had issues with a purely atheistic society and required that the script include some mention of a monotheistic deity reference. Although, I agree that the humor of the other post escapes me as well.
