Need advice on a Trek story

Couple of thing bother me about the basic story. By the year 2099 there wouldn't be a large enough Human precents in the next star system for there to be two competing factions. Planets are BIG, the two oppossing factions could just land on oppposite sides on the planet and pretend the others aren't there, this isn't "Lost" and everyones on one island (or two).

It might be useful to learn more about the two postions and differences between the warrior and the hippie. Something beyond stereo-type labels. I realize that makes the story harder, but also more interesting.

If it were a group of actual Hawks vs a group of dedicated Peaceniks there would be no need for any kind of treaty, there is a saying "Those who beat their swords into plowshares shall plow for those who didn't."

What kind of forces does the hippie leader have, if attacked will he bomb Earth perhaps.

Is the warrior's intractible position based upon repeated desceptions on the part of the hippie leader? WHY won't he talk?

Is the warrior being pushed by unseen political leadership?

It might be interesting if this treaty would have all come out as history was written and it's the presents of the Challanger, say two-thirds through the story, that sends things array.
