Need a good read... suggestions?

I'm looking for a good follow-up novel in canon with either Enterprise or DS9. Both series ended on sour notes, IMHO... and I know there are a couple good follow-up series out there... but I'm looking for some recommendations from people who have read through them... any hits or misses I should know about? My only exposure to Trek lit is a couple TNG books (Vendetta is still one of my favorite novels) and some random DS9 books.

Thanks in advance :-)

You're in luck: both DS9 and Enterprise have ongoing book series dedicated to exploring what happens after the show's respective finales, both of which have proven popular with most fans. You can find a list of the books in questions, with the published reading order, in our FAQ, here.

To satiate my own curiosity: I know why everybody and his aunt hated TATV, but what about "What You Leave Behind" hit a sour note, in your opinion?

Thanks for the heads-up, Trent. I saw the FAQ, but wanted to get some opinions before I hit up Amazon from some ppl who've read the books.

I don't even consider TATV an episode, I don't actually even watch it when I re-watch ENT.

WYLB was a great episode, but it left far too many lose ends for me. DS9 was by far my favorite series of Trek from a story-telling standpoint... the series was very character driven and left me really wanting to know what happened to everyone after the events in the finale. Same thing with ENT, I'd like to see more about the development of the Federation, the Romulan Wars, and so many other things that could have been hit on had that series been allowed to run it's course. Don't get me wrong, I loved the DS9 finale, but it just left me wanting so much more. Hope that answers your question!

Ah, well, in that case: I think the Deep Space Nine relaunch is one of, if not the best series out there, complex, engaging and generally awesome, and there's a good consensus on that point. Conversely, I found the two ENT Relaunch books so lacking in credibility that I've stopped reading the series, but that's not the majority opinion around these parts.

Then you should definitely read the post-finale (or Relaunch as they are more commonly called here) books. Both series do a great job of providing exactly what you looking for, in a way that really fits well with the shows. If it makes you feel any better, there have actually 2 DS9 Relaunch novels written by writers of the show. Abyss, which was co-written by David Weddle, the co-writer the 12 episodes of the show (including Rules of Engagement, Sons and Daughters, Til Death Do Us Part), and David Mack who co-wrote Starship down, and the story for It's Only A Paper Moon.

While I did enjoy the Ent Relaunch books, they do kinda go off in their own direction as things build to the Romulan War. I would still recommend them though, because I do like the direction that they've taken things.

I suspect you'll like the DS9 relaunch books. Like the TV series, the books are strongly character-driven, and there's a lot of ongoing continuity from book to book. Most of them can be read as standalone novels, but the effect is a lot better if you read them all, and in order.

I especially enjoyed how the DS9 relaunch. The Mission Gamma series has been some of the best ST reading, IMHO. I especially like what they've done with the Andorians and with Ezri Dax.

The DS9 and ENT relaunches are both very good. I'm reading "Demons of air and darkness" (The sixth book in the DS9 relaunch) atm, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first 5 books of it.

So should I start with the DS9 books or Enterprise? I suppose I would be leaning toward DS9, and I've been wondering how that story continues a lot longer than Enterprise... but which series would you guys say is the better read?

Personally, I think the DS9 books are a lot more interesting than the Enterprise books, but that's at least partly because I like DS9 as a TV series a lot more than I like Enterprise as a TV series.

DS9 definitely. IMO the DS9R is one of the best Trek series out there right now.
The Enterprise books are good, but they don't even don't even come close.
