NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Okay, I've got this new idea for a sport in the planning stages right now. The way it works is that we determine who the best teams are by polls before the season even starts. If you're not high on the poll, it doesn't matter how many games you win -- the only way you can move up it is if teams above you fall down and fall past you.

Also, while every team can take part in the polls, not every team is allowed to take part in the postseason. A lot of teams are allowed into the postseason, but there's only one round of playoffs for the championship. The two teams who get to play will also be determined by a poll, and they might have to wait between 4-6 weeks from the end of the regular season to even play in this game.

So what do you think?

24-21

:( - that hurt
Sorry Neroon. I feel your pain. Oregon lost three bowls in a row at one point so I have some idea of what it's like to have to spend the entire off-season with it and start over again.

It was still a good game though.

Thank God. Mac Brown wouldn't have been able to go out in public after all the public whining and politicking he did about the Horns not getting the chance to play in the title game after beating Oklahoma.

To be fair, Stoops did quite a bit of that towards the end of the regular season, himself.

As for last night's Fiesta Bowl, there's no doubt as to which was the better team and that was Texas. But there's also no doubt that the Buckeyes gave it all they had. Corny as this sounds, I am darned proud of them. Very disappointed that they lost, but very proud that they played hard, hit hard and left it all on the field.

Well, at least OSU didn't get blown out.

But they did collapse under the weight of possible victory.

What a great game.

To the viewer who isn't a devotee of either school but jsut wants to watch a good college football game, this one had it all. Two of the most successful programs of all time, each having won a national title after a long drought. Two of the top bands in college. Prime time audience. Tension and surprises, even if the play overall wasn't all that hot.

Ironic isn't it, that the saem type of play which cost Texas the game agaisnt Texas Tech actually helped them to win THIS game. I'm referring to the dropped interception that OSU's Robert Rose had a chacne at. He makes that catch and it's game over.

Neroon, believe it or not ...

... I was pulling for Ohio State. They showed a lot of character.

I also think the officials blew that spot. If you keep trying to run/fighting for yards and are pushed back, the spot should be at the point you're brought down/pushed out. Forward progress only applies if the play is blown dead, not if it continues, and that one did.

Frankly, if the official makes the correct call, OSU wins. I'm sure Texas fans don't want to see it that way, but ... there's really no way around it. The Buckeyes got boned.

I call for some rule tweaks that return the advantage to defense. It's ridiculous when people are talking about the Ohio State defense's terrific performance, and they gave up almost 500 yards.

The spot was so close that one cannot help but wonder if it was accurately made. Then again an error in that can easily go either way. Nad yeah, there were some strange officials calls: pass interference on both players? :wtf: or the roughness call on Gibson when he hit McCoy's shoulder pads? :wtf:

That said, there were several other chances the Bucks had that could have turned the outcome of the game in their favor. Browning's offside penalty when they had 3rd and 2 at the Texas 7 in the first half. Other stupid penalties. I have my doubts about this team's discipline - not that they are bad kids but rather in the attention to details. The 2002 championship team was known for beign disciplined and not makign stupid penalties. IOW, they didn't beat themselves.

Two of the top bands in college.

Speaking of which...

Did anyone else find the spectacle of the Texas Marching Band performing Led Zeppelin in their orange jumpsuits and cowboy hats a little...surreal?

I'm glad some else mentioned that. It wasn't exactly the kind of image I'd choose, personally. Then again I guess I chalked it up to different tastes for various band styles.

I was rooting for Ohio State too. They showed a lot of heart with that 4th quarter comeback, too bad they ended up losing.

Throughout the year I felt Ohio State should have used a 2 QB system and not put the burden on the freshman QB. The 2 of them looked very effective together in the first quarter of the USC game and I think they ended that experiment prematurely because of what happened the rest of that game. So they finally went back to it, but a little too late. They may have won the Penn State game if they had used both QBs.

Pryor is so-so as a passer but a terror as a runner. Ohio State needs to call/design more running plays for Pryor. And he needs to learn to take off more quickly if no receiver is open, and also not get out of bounds when he can still run for another 5 yards. Hopefully all of these improvements happen after the USC game next season. ;)

Ironically, when he first started playing this year people were concerned that he took off too often. Now the reverse seems to have overcompensated. You can best believe that OSU's #1 Pryority in the off-season will be to work on his down-field passing. He has a strong enough arm, but he needs to release the ball faster and not lob it in so much. Of course, this one recruit who is strongly considering Ohio State - Tahj Boyd - may alter the QB landscape if he does commit to OSU.

I have to say that Pryor at the quarterback position is a serious misallocation of resources.

Others have similar thoughts to yours, but I'm not one of them. He's a tremendous talent who still has much to learn at the major college level. I can point to a couple of wins the Buckeyes had this year that I think were likely losses if Boeckman was at QB. Still, that productivity with them both in the lineup was intriguing.... maybe it'd have been moreseo had they started out earlier with that formation.

Oddly enough he also has Oregon on his short (three) list of possible schools. Just like Pryor did. Maybe we'll win one recruiting battle yet.

I don't know..... he might be scared off by how the Ducks seem to go through QB's pretty quickly.

:D

Hopefully that Tahj Boyd dude picks the other school (Clemson?) he is interested in. ;)

Actually you guys can have these dual threat QBs as long as USC gets the best pro style ones. The top high school QB, Matt Barkley, has already enrolled at USC for the spring semester.
