NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Pac-10 finished 5-0 in the bowl games. My Trojans are going to finish in the top-5 for the 7th straight season.

My God I thought that second half was never going to end!

Sanchez was on fire today, and even though USC's defense decided to sleepwalk through the second half, it's a nice win.

:techman:

^^You wouldn't know it from those announcers.

Penn State gets a first down and declines an offsides penalty and all Herbie and Musberger has to say is something about how great USC's defense is. They barely said anything about Penn State the entire game; instead they gushed about how wonderful USC is (mostly their defense) for three hours non-stop, like they were the only team on the field.

If PSU hadn't taken so many penalties and Royster hadn't gotten hurt, things could have turned out differently. The offense would have converted a few more of those 3rd and shorts in the second with Evan playing. Greene's better in open space, but Royster's much better at reading his blockers and gets those yards after contract. Most importantly, he doesn't fumble the football. That said, our secondary was awful. They've been suspect all year, but the Big Ten has RBs and not QBs so it never really was a problem. Sanchez did a great job under pressure and found his targets.

I really hope Royster's knee injury isn't something serious. I don't think they ever said what it was.

I think I was OK until Keyshawn Johnson showed up

I think the game's momentum would have been completely different if they hadn't screwed themselves up with penalties ... or if they could stop the pass, but I digress :p

Frightening to think that over the last ten contests, Texas has won more Rose Bowls than Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan—combined.

It's a little deceptive, granted, considering OSU's participation in BCS title games ... but it's still a pretty startling statistic.

My thoughts, exactly. USC is like a freight train. Once it gets that head of steam up, there's almost nothing that can stop them, especially with that defense. But yeah, those two early penalties wasted two golden opportunities. Royster's injury sure didn't help, either. Penn St had to play an almost perfect game, and they just didn't start out that way.

As an aside, I just read that Sanchez is probably going to consider making himself available for the draft.

Really, it's just Michigan that's fucking up there. They lost 3 times in the last 10 years. At least Ohio State gets the excuse of not actually going.

Even I noticed that.

Musberger was talking about the Pac Ten going 5-0 in bowl games in the second quarter!

He did more than that. He played one of the best games in Rose Bowl history.

His stats for the day:

28-35, 412 yds
5 TDs (1 rushing)

Give the man some credit.

I think Sanchez would be a fool to come out now. He had a good season, and an incredible Rose Bowl, but I think he would benefit greatly from another year in college.

Definitely agreed. He had a good year, but he still had some inconsistent performances, something another year in college could improve. My biggest concern with QBs in college, as always, is do they have the mind for the pro QB job?

I think Sanchez has answered that in some measure simply by having been the USC starting quarterback. It's a lot different than being under center for, say, Nebraska in the 80's.

At USC they don't even have to be a starting QB to make it to NFL, e.g. Matt Cassell.

But I do think Sanchez should come back. He is having too much fun to give it up to go to the "No Fun League". And next season, with the entire offense (except one receiver) coming back and mostly new starters on defense (which means less conservative play calling on offense), he should do even better.

Well, the upper echelon Big 12 teams just took another hit, as Texas Tech was handled easily by Ole Miss, 47-34. The Rebs spotted the Red Raiders a couple early TDs, then simply stomped TTU the rest of the way. This, coupled with Oklahoma State's lackluster performance against Oregon, tarnishes the conference's image a bit.

Granted, Mizzou beat Northwestern and Kansas Minnesota, but ... they're Northwestern and Minnesota, after all. Nebraska's got the most impressive win, so far, over a Clemson team that really didn't get out of its own way for most of the season.

Looks like it's up to UT and OU to salvage the big boys' honor.

I'm not really watching the game, but seeing the score, I am absolutely shocked Utah is crushing Alabama.

Man, these NCAA refs pull some call out of there asses for sure...

... wait that's seemed to be the issue with all refs of all sports this year.

Tech didn't really care about their bowl game. They packed it in after the loss to OU and even almost lost to Baylor the next week. Besides that they were playing with an injured Michael Crabtree.

OSU's performance wasn't lackluster, it was a very close game until a turnover in the final minutes. We also need to take into account here Dez Bryant's injury in the 2nd quarter where he'd already had over a 100 yards---and was never the same after that. Also, you have to take into account Zach Robinson was playing with what seemed like a concussion.

Its hard to say after those games that the Big 12 is as impressive as it looked throughout the season. I guess we'll find out when a healthy Texas, and banged up OU take on their respective opponents.
