NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Nahh..... it;s OSU and the Mich St coach used to be the OSU defensive coordinator = two winners. :techman:

And look at that... Mississippi nearly blows that long pass earlier but still gets only a FG. OTOH, those are the first points Bama has surrendered in the first quarter to date this season

USC is already up 14-0 on Wash St..... this is going to be utterly brutal.

Texas Tech puts away A&M in a game much closer than I thought it would

Terelle Pryor has 60 yds rushing already against Mich St, with a 7-0 lead.

And what has gotten into Maryland?!? 25-0 over Wake Forest? That's two Jekyl & Hyde teams for my money.

Did you see what USC is doing to Wash. St.?!?
I mean, I know USC is one of the top teams in the country and WasU is one of the worst (coaching changes, injuries, etc notwithstanding), but 41 - 0 ..... at halftime?!?!?!.

In other news, Rutgers may not be having a good season, but they pulled out a great win today 12-10 over UConn. Sincere congrats for Rutgers for not packing it in and pulling the upset against a very good Huskies squad

Everyone is pounding Wazzu this year. I can't even count how many times teams have scored more than 60 points against them. They're young (mostly freshmen and sophomores), crippled by injuries, have a new coaching staff and undersized for the PAC-10. It's going to be a brutal year in the Palouse.

On top of that didn't they have some nasty off-field scandals recently? I have to gice Pete Carroll props for putting in his 3rd and 4th string players for a large stretch of the second half.... and letting them play. It may have been 69-0, but a fair amount of that hurt was put on by guys who don't get to play much. When they do get in, they ought to be allowed to play as best they can.

Kudos to Carroll and staff but also to the Wasu players for sucking it up and trying.

I don't think USC threw a pass in the second half. Not that it mattered.

Washington State was clearly outmatched today. I almost felt sorry for them. This game doesn't really say much about USC, other than they are capable of focusing and taking care of opponents they should.

There was one amazing stat that stood out to me:

Total Yards in the First Half:

USC - 408
WSU - 17

:techman:

Two shut-outs in a row. That's pretty nice too. USC is giving up something like 9 points a game.

We'll face a tougher challenge against Arizona next week.

I watched almost none of that game, because there werew a couple of others that were jest a leeeeetle more competitive. :D

mimic ... don't scare me like that! Michigan actually was leading in the second half. :p In all seriousness. that was a good performance in the second half by your Lions. They never got down but stepped it up. I'm not a big fan of the way your QB carried the ball a few times, holding it out liek a loaf of bread. But still.... eveyr sucked it up and played strong.

Michigan... isn't as bad as people think. Yeah, the season has been a roller coaster, but you can't do that if you don't have talent. It will take time, but the Wolverines will come back

Michigan showed some flashes of promise in the Penn State game, but they just aren't consistent enough on either side of the ball. They probably won't make a bowl game this year, but next year should be better.

Good job Penn State though.

I thought Minor looked good today. Threatt... had moments. They lost some players in the off-season, and it's a brand new system. But Rich-Rod is an excellent recruiter. with a system that works in the college level. He will get the type of talent he needs, and things will rise back up.

I just look at this whole "they'll be better next year thing" with a little bit of caution. I remember what happened in Nebraska when Bill Calahan was there, and things never got any better.

I also remember the Detroit Lions, who are always supposed to be better next year and never are.

So I'm a little cautious about getting my hopes up for next year with Michigan.

The way things have looked, cautious is good. However, don't forget that Callahan was an NFL coach bringing a whole different system and way of life just about, to the college environment. He was trying to run a college program like an NFL club, almost. Rich-Rod is a proven college winning coach at the college level. His problem is that he needs a certain type of player, and that will take time. He also is an "outsider" as far as the Michigan program is concerned, meaning it will take time to win over the old guard. I'm betting he can do that... but it will take time.

mimic ... don't scare me like that! Michigan actually was leading in the second half. :p
The drum major missed the first flip but landed the second. I think that's sufficient explanation for everything.
 - I need "high five" smilie here.

Man... I cannot believe the whippin' that Texas is putting on Missouri! The second string QB comes in for the Longhorns .... and BAM ... 51 yd TD pass!! No doubt who is #1 and maybe they've broken the "curse" of the #1 ranking.

I got to respect Penn State's crushing of Michigan. I know Michigan isn't a good team for the past few years but Michigan is still a great program and has a lot of pride. Michigan actually was leading and Penn State absolutely dismantled them.

Yay Penn State. Honestly, I felt this was the game they needed to win the most. There might be tougher games this season, but there seemed to be a mental inability to beat Michigan in the past that they had difficulty of overcoming.

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending Saturday, October 18th, 2008

1 – Texas (7-0)

They're looking as close to invincible as any college team I've ever seen. The big question: Could they do this to an SEC defense?

2 – Alabama (7-0)

Only now, despite what it said in the coaches' and media polls, have the Longhorns passed them on merit.

3 – Penn State (8-0)

We'll have the answer as to whether they're truly for real soon. I'm inclined to think they are: Michigan punched them in the mouth; their response to was to get up off the canvas and pummel them mercilessly, which is what a championship team must do.

4 – Oklahoma State (7-0)

Who'd have thought that Texas-Oklahoma State might be bigger than Texas-Oklahoma? It will be if the Cowboys win.

5 – Utah (8-0)

And then there were three: Boise State is licking its chops, because the Utes still play Texas Christian and Brigham Young.

6 – Texas Tech (7-0)

That offense is terrific: A&M scored on five of its first six possessions, and still led only 23-20 at the half. On the other hand, if they win even three of their next four, I'll be absolutely stunned.

7 – Oklahoma (6-1)

The sign of a contender: They already dream of another shot at UT. TCU's blowout of BYU also says something about the Sooners—who handled the Horned Frogs with relative ease.

8 – Georgia (6-1)

They're sneaking back into the conversation.

9 – Florida (5-1)

The Ole Miss loss really doesn't look so bad as it did.

10 – Southern California (5-1)

Washington State is starting to look like the Temple for the New Millennium.

11 – Ohio State (7-1)

As I expected, the Bucks exposed Michigan State as the palooka-disguised-as-a-player they always are. I shall (unfortunately) not be able to justly holding OSUout of the top ten if they defeat Penn State. This one means everything to both: The national championship aspiration wheels fall off the loser, because a one-loss Penn State ain't goin' anywhere near a game like that.

12 – Boise State (6-0)

I have a sneaking suspicion these guys, and not Utah, may end up crashing the BCS party. They've got San Jose State and Fresno State remaining as genuine threats. Not much of a rogues gallery, is it?

13 – Louisiana State (5-1)

Some sage commented that Miles is starting to run out of Saban recruits. Wonder if we'll see a sudden drop in the Tigers' fortunes next year?

14 – Texas Christian (7-1)

Could you make a case for them as a BCS buster if they run the table, assuming Boise loses one? Their 11-1 record would include wins over BYU, Utah, and Air Force—a quality win, that last—along with a loss to OU in which the Sooners did not score 857 points.

15 – Pittsburgh (5-1)

They've just about recovered from their loss to Bowling Green—in time to lose to 2-5 Rutgers.

16 – South Florida (6-1)

I think the Big East winner will have at least two losses,, maybe three, and meet the Boise State/Utah/Ball State/Texas Christian survivor in a BCS bowl.

17 – Georgia Tech (6-1)

Suddenly they're the class of the ACC carousel.

18 – Ball State (7-0)

Their schedule actually heats up a bit, with a few two-loss conference foes in their future. Would 12-0 get them into my top ten? Yes ... barely.

19 – Missouri (5-2)

Once again, the Tigers have a taste of the Promised Land, and are then cast back onto the Sinai.

20 – Boston College (5-1)

Fortunately, the ACC always has another brace of contenders to replace the fallan.

21 – Cincinnati (5-1)

Struggling against Rutgers looks marginally less pathetic now that the Knights have briefly roused themselves to beat UConn.

22 – Florida State (5-1)

Papa Bowden will be nipping at Joe Pa's heels if the Lions falter at Ohio State.

23 – Tulsa (7-0)

And what about a 12-0 Tulsa? What consideration do they deserve? They'd have to hang their hat on a win over Arkansas. That wouldn't be sayin' enough this year, IMO.

24 – Brigham Young (6-1)

I couldn't even watch it got so ugly.

25 – Minnesota (6-1)

Now how long before they pull a Michigan State and I have to regret ranking them?

In other news, Rutgers may not be having a good season, but they pulled out a great win today 12-10 over UConn. Sincere congrats for Rutgers for not packing it in and pulling the upset against a very good Huskies squad.

Thanks for noticing, Neroon. :)

UConn actually ain't that great, but ... .

Now when they beat Pitt next week I'll feel a lot better.
