NASA Unveils new rocket

From NASA's website..

It'll be taller than the Saturn V...with boosters on the side.. more like an evolved Saturn V than anything..

If the first stage is not intended to be recoverable and its engines reusable, I would have thought that it's a bit of a waste to use SSMEs instead of RS-68Bs.

Wow! A real life kitbash. A Saturn V merged with the shuttle booster rockets.

How many times do I have to say this. This is the Ares V with updated engines. The first stage is based on the Shuttle External fuel tank. The only part from the Saturn is the J-2X engine from the second stage.

Doesn't change the fact that it looks like a Saturn V.There's a reason people keep on saying it ;) Plus, it doesn't help that the picture you linked too states the engines are souped up Saturn V engines.

Which they can't be as they burn LH2 in LOX and not RP-1 (kerosene) in LOX like the F-1s did on the S-1C. These engines are variants of the Shuttle's main engines.

But it really does look like a souped-up Saturn V with that paint job.

Those are just promotional images. The real thing won't be painted, the main stage will be orange like the spaceshuttle main tank. Too bad they went with this configuration. The initial 70mt version is closer to Direct than Ares V in design. Either way I have my doubts this will ever get completed.

Perhaps, but if it's flown, the first flight likely will be painted..(shuttle did the same thing back in '81)...

and the "Evolved" version looks far moe like a Saturn V than it's initial version...and it's larger than the Saturn V...

I do think the initial version will be built, after all there's no more Space Shuttle to eat up all the money..

Yeah, the Senate Launch System is perfectly capable of eating up all that money all by itself.

Somebody please wake me up when pictures of an actual man-rated rocket with crewed capsule on top are posted, instead of an artist's conception of a man-rated rocket. Until I see that, it doesn't exist.
