NASA footage of Apollo 11 erased. Hollywood to the rescue!

Of course, conspiracy theorists will have a field day, I'm sure. Yet I still find this entertaining, to think techniques used in the movie industry are able to help recover valuable, historical records such as this,

"Nafzger, who was in charge of the live TV recordings in the Apollo years, said they were mostly thought of as data tapes. In retrospect, he said he wished NASA hadn't reused the tapes. Outside historians were aghast.
"It's surprising to me that NASA didn't have the common sense to save perhaps the most important historical footage of the 20th century," said Rice University historian and author Douglas Brinkley."

I know why people scratch their chins over this, but I understand NASA's original line of thinking. Copies had been made, the people at NASA just thought of them as data tapes at the time.

Imagine someone in the future getting worked up because the harddrive of the digital camera that saved the picture of man's first step on Mars wasn't saved in perpetuity after it's data had been transferred. Unlikely. If it was preserved at all it would be as a part of the entire craft, not for the value of the data it contained.

I hope they'll update and rethink the Lunar Landing Module. I mean, they just used the same design for mission after mission - even in those days, when you watched the footage on TV you caught the re-use of visual elements and designs on Apollo 9, and 10, and 11, and 12.

Even after they destroyed everything on 13 they just resurrected the old versions one mission later. Lame - acceptable in 1970, maybe, but not today.

NASA needs to get some of the Trek Remastered people working on this. ;)

I still don't get the conspiracy knuckleheads' arguments that there were no stars in the background in any of the lunar photos/videos.

HELLO!!! It was daytime on the surface of the moon. You don't see stars in the DAYTIME! Just because the sky is as black as space, doesn't mean that the light reflecting off the surface won't drown out the small specs of light that stars are. Especially with the cameras used then, especially the video cameras with just some 300 some odd lines of resolution, is it any wonder why you can't see small specs of light?

Now of course, whenever we go back and we'll have HD cameras, and who knows by then, we may be up to 1400p cameras. We should see some extraordinary detail of both the surface and of the lunar sky.

I think they need to hot-rod the whole thing up. Make it sexy.

I think they should have marketing pictures of models half naked showing off various functions of new space suits. Maybe the could add a few shoots of the same women sprawled out on their backs on top of a space shuttle with a come to Jesus look in their eyes. Oh, and lots and lots of fire in the back ground with the women being hosed off from time to time to keep them cool.

And the astronauts always walk in extreme slow motion and when they plant the flag the camera should spin around and around them. Michael Bay does Apollo 11--now with 102% more Megan Fox!

I approve this idea.
