I found someone who published a tutorial on YouTube about STO. She created a character named "Tight Pants" (a kind of Vulcan/Trill mix) with enoooorrrrmous...er, tracks of land. Ahem.
She named her ship USS Pants.
Found someone else who named their ship USS Incompetence.
She named her ship USS Pants.

A few of my kitbashes are named based on the donor kits:
The USS Val'Walo was made from a Gundam called a Val-Walo.
The cargo shuttle named Voyager was made from the Aurora cartoon Fantastic Voyage Voyager.
The Klingon Mer'Q 9 battlecruiser was made from the Pegasus Models Mercury 9 spaceship.
The Perry was made from a Revell Perry Rhodan model.
Starbase 51, "Pegasus Base," is made of Pegasus Models flying saucers.
The USS Ascender is so-named because it's backwards (Ass-Ender).
The USS Tiburon looks shark-like to me.
USS Peregrine is a bird-of-prey.

I named my Odyssey-class starship in STO U.S.S. Entreprenante. She was previously a Galaxy-class starship.
I remember feeling intrigued by the idea of a ship called El Dorado, i.e. naming a starship after a fictional place. Then we got an actual space shuttle named Atlantis!

El Dorado wasn't a fictional place, he was a person, the Chief of the Muisca tribe in South America. And sure, name a ship after him.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it because it wasn't mentioned in the post, but USS Shangri-La CV-38 was a US aircraft carrier for almost 30 years. The name commemorated the Halsey-Doolittle Raid of 1942.
I always thought of Pacer, Gremlin and Matador classes when I heard "Ambassador class."
Speaking of real American warship names, I was researching some the other day and noticed not a few... intriguing and unexpected entries. In the spirit of naming starships after 1970's automobiles (USS El Dorado). I give you the USS Cordoba. The seats on the bridge are made of a very special rare material.
Well, when you have to come up with 300+ fish or "denizens of the deep" names for submarines things are bound to get interesting; lets face it, fishermen have come up with some pretty colorful names for what's turned up in their nets over the centuries. But all kidding aside, Tang, Flasher, Wahoo and Harder have some of the proudest records in USN history.

I believe I've actually heard of the Harder (as in "Hit 'Em Again...", yes?). Yeah, I tried to stay away from anything that was obviously just a slightly humorous-sounding fish name, but I probably still have a few in there.
The video above was too funny. The Reliant is made by Chrysler. That explains why everything broke so easily. And the ship always seemed slow and sluggish.
