I distinctly remember reading that one on a very long bus trip to Canada.

TNG: Balance of Power, loaned to me buy a friend. Thought it was hillarious but then I coudn't finish it when they got to the auction.

Same here, followed by Joe Haldeman's Planet of Judgement. Though the novels from that period of time are mostly out of sync with current continuity, they were mighty enjoyable reads when they first came out.
Heck, they were out of sync with continuity at the time. Like SMD mentioning that Spock would eat a "standard ship's meal" of a chicken sandwich, overlooking Vulcan vegetarianism.
My first was The Vulcan's Soul Trilogy: Exodus.

I really don't think Blish meant to imply that it was vegetarian chicken substitute. And he certainly would never have heard of a protein resequencer, a concept that wasn't introduced until decades later. Given how early the book was written, he most likely just didn't realize that Spock was supposed to be a vegetarian.
^ Well, then shame on him for not knowing Spock's a vegeterian. 
The book was written in 1970, before Blish (who lived in England) had ever actually seen ST, and he'd only done three volumes of adaptations by that point, based on scripts that weren't 100 percent accurate. Today, in this age of instant information retrieval and home video, it's much easier to get the details right than it was then. So I don't think there's any call to "shame" anyone.
I'm rereading Spock Must Die I kinda wince everytime Kirk calls McCoy "Doc" Also when reading Scotty's phonetic Scottish accent.
IIRC, the editor made him change that one.

Dreams of the Raven, i think. Saw it at a yard sale, when i was in grade school. Had been a Trek fan for a little while, because NBC used to rerun TOS episodes at 4pm in my area, so basically got to watch it when I got off the school bus every day. Was a big reader, so thought I'd give one a try. It was an *interesting* choice for a first Tek book, but I devoured the rest after that. Wanna say I was about in 3rd grade?
My first Star Trek Novel was Sarek, it had to have been sometime in 94, my very first exposure to Trek that I can solidly remember was TNGs Imaginary Friend, My mother(tho she will deny it up and down) used to watch Trek late at nite and I would sneak out of bed to watch it from the hallway, altho by then this was a pattern for me, so I probably watched alot of mid-run TNG when it was new and just dont remember it(was born in 84)
