name that TNG episode

I just scanned the Wikipedia list of all TNG episodes but didn't spot it, so I hope everyone will forgive me for asking here...

Which TNG episode features the situation in which youngsters are left alone and have to shoulder the unexpected task of acting as the Enterprise crew without adult supervision?

I wouldn't say that "Rascals" follows the plot that the op presented, but it's the likeliest episode, as it fits the closest. The command crew is captive, but still present, and the majority of the youngsters are in fact Enterprise officers who've undergone an accidental DNA altering event, which reverted them into children, and gives them an element of surprise for regaining control of the ship, from invading Ferengi

I can't really think of any other episode where children had to act for the crew

I think the OP just misremembered the premise a little. Rascals has to be the ep OP is looking for. Nothing else fits.

Just watched "Rascals," fun episode!

Unfortunately that's not the one I had seen so many years ago. I guess the episode was from a different Star Trek series (though certainly not TOS).

Should I go ahead and post the question to the DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise forums?

You might be misremembering parts of Disaster.

Maybe you're thinking of the DS9 episode Valiant, where a bunch of Red Squad cadets are left in charge of the Valiant?

This is about the only other one that came to mind when the question was first asked for me as well. Disaster would really have to be misremembered for it to fit due to the fact that Picard provides each of the kids with a pip and a rank as a way of keeping them focussed. The only thing they were in charge of was saving their own butts.

Yep, it was the DS9 episode "Valiant." Thanks everyone for responding!

I caught only a fragment of the episode on TV many years ago and then had to go do something else, so wanted to watch the whole thing again to see what happened.

As an old curmudgeon who fell in love with TOS in the 1970's, I never was a big fan of TNG, but have been impressed with the handful of DS9 episodes I've seen, and thought Valiant was darned good; good script, and the cinematography seemed unusually good for television.

BTW, I watched TNG "Disaster" and was, um, surprised at the *appearance* of the Marissa character in the turbolift just prior to the disaster. Don't want to spell it out here, but what the heck were the costume people and director thinking? I couldn't believe what I saw and went back and froze it and yes, my eyes were not deceiving me. WTF?
