I'm probably not going to be around until tomorrow evening, so here's another clue.

I wonder if all of the uses are obvious from looking at it.
I'll say a communicator in the hopes that it is not so.
Communications is an obvious use. Creating rock slides via sonic disruption? Not so obvious.

Is it obvious from looking at it what a communicator does, though? The Ekosians in POF evidently didn't care about them very much, as opposed to sending the "alien pistols" to another laboratory. And in FC, Kirk seemed to need to explain what "those devices on our belts" were to Akaar. Actually, I kind of always liked it when alien cultures didn't automatically know what various pieces of equipment were.
Maybe it’s those blue or red jumpsuits that some crewman wear...
I think so because I see something that looks like a speaker and something that looks like a microphone and two knobs which could be volume and tuning, and a small box about the size of a walkie-talkie.

"Mirror, Mirror" episode (title of episode) plus evil Kirk uses mirror to cover scratches, Deadly Years..."stupid place to hang a mirror" to show her age and Trelane's mirror machine, looking into it, never wanders too far from it.
