Name something you learnt while visiting Trekbbs

I am sure there is many interesting facts we have learnt (or learned) from each other

For example

I had no idea that Good Friday wasn't a public holiday in the USA until I was told so on this board. I just assumed it was as it is in Britain, Australia etc. Same with Boxing Day.

I like it when somebody posts a link to interesting articles.

For example I learnt here on TrekBBS that DVDs won't last forever, even if their quality will grant a good usage of at least 15 years, after that time their surface will start deteriorating progressively. And it's even more so for CD-Roms.

Boxing Day doesn't even exist in America.

Boxing Day I knew about, because an American friend responded 'huh?' when I mentioned it. But Good Friday is new to me.

I've come into contact with very open minded folks here as well as bigoted closet-racists here.

It opened my mind quite a bit to the human nature (it's a bit exaggerated due to the anonymity of the net but here people really express how they feel sometimes instead of real life where it would earn them social black marks if they were like they behave here).

Other than that i've learned quite a bit about different customs in other countries.

Trekbbs has become one of my favorite message boards and Star Trek has only very little to do with it now (i rarely venture in Trek related sections ).

Good Friday and Easter Monday are no longer fixed holidays in Scotland. People can take them at any time, if they so choose. I think it's to divorce them from purely Christian connotations.

I have picked up many little things from this place. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here. I just can't remember anything off the top of my head right now!

I know I've picked up a lot of American phrases... since I don't watch much TV, this is probably the only place it could have happened.

I think the best things I have learned about on the TrekBBS are new TV shows. Living in Romania for the last three years I haven't been exposed to all the commercials hyping new shows.

I've learned that people in the UK (and probably some other areas) prepare recipes by weight, not volume like we do in the US. Most people in the US use measuring cups and have never even seen a kitchen scale, vice versa for the UK.

Is that true? Do you have a source that backs that up?

I learned how reviled Voyager was by visiting Trekbbs.

I have found out that some here.....like to eat the cheese and partake of it's dairy goodness. Some, however, do not.

*gasp!*

Yeah! I know!

I learned that when someone says "Hey, there's a new pic on Garak's profile", you should never, never view said pic. :wah:

I've got tons of CDs that are 20+ years old, none of them have deteriorated :vulcan:

I've learned that DS9 is awesome (I didn't bother watching it until I started coming here, besides the odd few episodes on TV).
