I sympathize, but you gotta admit, how else are people supposed to know that anything is being done? It's in human nature to want to feel safe.

I'd rather be safe than be a witness to a potemkin village designed to make it look like there's a safety program in place, but to each their own.

There needs to be passenger screening so that obvious hazards aren't taken on board aircraft - knives, guns, explosives and the like. A federal bureaucracy doesn't need to be created to do that.

Then again are you sure that the actual operation of the air port's security is actuall run by the government rather than the government setting the guildines?

Manchester Airport has admitted it might be illegal for children to use its new "nude" security scanner when it comes into operation at the end of the month.

The full body scanner, which was launched in a blaze of publicity, reveals everything under clothing and shows a clear outline of the passenger's genitals.

The airport has now said that no under-18s will be allowed to use the device unless it can clarify the law on indecent images of children.

Manchester Airport's head of external communications, Russell Craig, said they would be taking advice before starting the trial at the end of the month.

"We believe it is legal," he told Sky News. "But we won't allow any under-18s through it if that's not the case."

Normally, the definition of 'indecent' under the Acts mentioned requires some form of sexual content - it can be enough that the image was taken with sexual gratification in mind, rather than there being anything overtly sexual about the image in isolation. I don't see a non-recorded security scan falling under the right categories, myself.

People really do need to stop screaming 'abuse' when there is none. It cheapens the actual offences which harm children. I think it's fairly unpleasant, actually, to liken a security professional at an airport to a creepy pervert with a camera at a children's park. Not to mention the images are grey, blurry and look like X-rays. Not exactly high quality porn, is it?

Me neither. You can't just say that every picture ever taken of a naked person is automatically sexual.

Look at documentary-style films and programs, for example. Has anyone ever seen Baraka? There's one scene which shows a large group of tribespeople, some of which are children, and they happen to be naked (although they do have body paint and jewelry). They aren't doing anything even remotely sexual. Is this therefore indecent? Of course not. Neither is this airport thing.

...ok, but this has pretty much been covered. There is unlikely to be any issues regarding children under relevant legislation given the type of images created and their intended use.

Errrm, why on earth not? An X-ray scanner wouldn't pick up tampons or sanitary towels any more than it would pick up clothing.

You are all over thinking this:

Security isn't about what can or can not be brought onto the plane. Security is the system looks like it works, so people listen to it. Perception is the key here.

There are many levels to security at an airport and in a larger airport security has even more levels. Heck I can't even admit to what levels there are cause its all SSI, so I'll say this:

Any employee of an airport or its tenants is subject to different levels of screening that are suppoose to capture known risks. The unknown risks can't be captured by the system, but an easy scenario for trouble is any airport maintenance person can bring into the sterile area any prohibited object they need to conduct their work.

There will always be holes, because they can't be filled and still fill planes.

I was once, the time I chose to wear a cowboy hat to the airport for fun. I was "randomly" chosen for a bag search too. Lesson: airport security don't like eccentrics.

On my trip to the US I was frisked twice, and "the computer selected me for a random additional search" twice....
