Nacelle Obsession & Secondary Hull Sleekness

Took me a while to get used to the the 'new' Ennerprise, but now it's my computer wallpaper.

However, you can't top the original - which, I think, still should've been used.

I wish I could like it. I have the toy, it sits on my desk and I see it everyday... but it doesn't FEEL right... I can't explain why.

Am I the only one who likes the blue nacelle caps?
I think they look fine.

The new Enterprise looks like something that has been designed, as opposed to cobbled together out of simple primitives. :D

The TMP refit, too. And that one looks much nicer. ;)

Well, the TMP refit does have a nice torpedo launcher, and ehh.. well, it has a nice torpedo launcher. :D
The refit has just never really looked like a unified design whole to me -- not in the theaters in 1979 and not now. It's very nicely modeled, it's beautifully photographed... and the various parts don't seem all to belong to the same ship. The saucer's okay, sort of, and the secondary hull's okay (if a bit plump-looking) and the torpedo launcher is okay. Sort of. But mostly okay, so far.

And then, you get to the flattened nacelles which would look more at home on a Klingon cruiser, and the nacelle struts arrayed at a wider angle, swept and reverse-tapered for reasons not intuitively obvious, and the "why?" factor starts to kick in for me, even now. Those parts seem to belong to another ship altogether. The whole does not look to me to be all of a piece -- a problem I don't have with the JJ-prise, design-wise.

I'm alright with the new design. It isn't the old, that's for sure... but I think if you take it on its own without trying to make comparisons it certainly has its own grace and beauty about it.

...oh, and there's a girl, too.

That's exactly what I think about the Frankenprise. It's an abomination where parts have been dug up from a grave site and pasted together.

I still don't like the secondary hull all that much. It just looks out of balance with the saucer and the warp nacelles. I just wish it were a bit thicker and didn't taper so soon or so steeply. I'd also prefer it if the nacelles were spaced just a bit wider apart, but I'm okay with them.

That said, I still like this version of the NCC-1701 better than the other two.

Why am I not surprised to see this? :p

You're not alone, though. Much was made by some -- from the release of that first photo onward -- about how the various pieces of the nuEnterprise didn't match up, stylistically. I'm only calling it the way it looks from where I sit.

I completely agree with you; the nacelles and pylons have always given me pause, as well. They simply don't seem to fit with the rest, even though there are more elements with art-deco influences.

You ain't kiddin'... if you look at the nacelle supports and compare them to the Enterprise E's, they're extremely similar if not identical.... just flipped around.

My guess is that Mr. Probert did that just to give the ship an appearance of being fast powerful and cool, even when staying still in dock. Automakers do the same thing with performance cars all the time.

The slanted nacelle struts on the TMP ship DO give more shuttlebay room inside the hull, what with the conduits moving forward and all.

TOS ship never looked quite right to me, since my first exposure to the Connie was through the movies.

NuEnterprise looks good except when viewed from above, an angle where the ship pays the price for tucking the nacelles in towards each other.

Can you really hate these lines?:

OOOOPS! Sorry; wrong image....

I mean, it is true to the classic design in so many ways...
WAIT- has this question been asked BEFORE?????

I love raining on this parade!! No I don't like the new design. So get over it.

My problem with the refit is it's a little TOO tall. I suppose that kind of fits with the sailing ship vibe they were going for (especially in TWOK), but I prefer the slightly shorter, squatter look of the new ship.

And while I had the same concerns about the nacelles and secondary hull at first too (based on that distorted fish-eye shot that was released), once I saw the beautiful QFX model those concerns went away completely.

The proportions couldn't be more perfect as far as I'm concerned (it would just be nice if the next movie showed them off a little better).

Fem-bot: Must...cut away...joke engines...now.

I can live with the saucer and maybe the secondary hull with a little rework.
But the struts and nacelles do have to go.
And it just can't be 800 metres long.
Perhaps Abrum can save face and say that after the battle of STXI, they replaced them with more advanced, smaller, more cylindrical engines?

.

It takes some getting used to. The "reveal" shot of the ship when McCoy and Kirk see it in the movie is very well done. I still wish they had gone with the classic design, but then again I wish they had done a lot of things differently...
