"Curving the bullet" to me would seem to violate several physical laws.

Most notably the ones that say objects move in straight lines.

Like, if the sun right now vanished -it's gravity well with it- the earth wouldn't continue to move in a circular pattern it'd shoot off in a straight line.

You can't "curve" a bullet. Now sure, you can curve things like bowling balls (but they're round) and baseballs (also round) but curving bullets? Seems like it'd be impossible to do.

Not until 8.5 minutes after the son vanished. For those 8.5 minutes we would know nothing. Then the sun would be gone, and the gravity would be too.

Yes.

:vulcan:

I was surprised that just for the sake of completeness they didn't let the gunslinging robot take one crack at the unrifled gun.

So you'd get both the gun movement and the bullet tumble? Yeah, I thought of that, and I'm sure they'll get complaints about not doing the whole schmeer. But as they explained, the locked-down rig was necessary to get the high-speed footage of the bullet in flight -- they had to know where it was aimed so they could point the camera in the right place. With a swinging gun, it would've been tougher to get the (camera) shot.

Besides, it was risky enough to use the spinning rig when the bullets weren't tricked out to follow unpredictable trajectories...

Actually 8 minutes, 19 seconds on average.

Just for the record, the episode turned out to be much better than I thought, all that gun-swinging was pretty scary though. ;)

Well, as I said things can't be "made" to follow a curved path. Centripital force doesn't work like that. ;)

An okay episode overall. Nothing stood out to me that's worth really going over. The sonic-boom stuff was kind of cool, though. Adam has now moved faster than the speed of sound!

I can't believe the actual myth was the stupid movie thing. And this was the most demanded myth that the fans wanted to be tested? Ugh.

But, I guess they've run out of "conventional" myths and have to dip into the well as it were.

I don't think it's any stupider than the one about cell phones blowing up gas stations. And it did allow for some science discussion, though they left out the key physics notion about how a curved path requires acceleration.

Considering that just about every gas station has those NO CELL PHONE signs everywhere, it's more justified that they went after that one than the curving bullets myth.

It sucks that even though cell phones don't effect planes in flight anymore, because their instruments are all shielded, we still have to turn them off when you are on a plane.

Lots of fans wanted to see this tested, which indicates that a lot of people are unsure whether what they saw in Wanted is real or not. It's worth answering that question. And of course not every myth's going to be equally pervasive. They've never chosen myths on the basis of how widely known they were. They've chosen them on the basis of whether they could be practically tested and provide entertaining viewing in the process.

For the good of humanity and social order I hope it stays that way!

Do you really want to be sitting practicaly right on top of someone in coach while they yak into their phone about their latest yeast infection?

No, but they should at least make exception for other electronics, which don't really do anything at all.

For the record:

Sonic Boom Sound-Off #1 - Busted. The shockwave generated by a supersonic bullet fired by the largest legally available weapon in the United States, a .50 calibre rifle, was not enough to shatter the various types of glass Adam and Jamie placed in its path.

Sonic Boon Sound-Off #2 - Busted. A test area, filled with glass objects was largely unaffected by multiple passes of a supersonic jet passing overhead, even at the lowest altitude of 200ft. Only one glass window broke and that was a result of the pressure on the frame rather than the sonic boom itself.

Bend a Bullet - Busted. Scenes from the film Wanted demonstrated the idea that a person with superhuman strength and speed, swinging a pistol rapidly while firing it could cause the bullet to curve around an obstacle between it and the target. Kari, Grant and Tory were unable to do this themselves. Grant modified the sword swinging robot to swing and fire the gun instead at superhuman speeds. Their tests showed that there was sign of any deviation in the path of the bullet. Even customising a gun barrel only had the effect of sending the bullet off in an unpredictable direction, but still a straight line.

Now they have to do that bit from Wanted where the lead crouches down and Angelina sends the car into a lateral skid with an open door and scoops him into the passenger seat.:)

You know, when I saw that shot in the commercials, I think my reaction was, "The Mythbusters should test that one."

But the question is, how to do it safely? It's the sort of thing that would probably require some active movement on the part of the person being so scooped, so I don't see it working with Buster as a stand-in. But it's too dangerous to test with a live person.

Easy, get a criminal who is on death row, who has exhausted all of his appeals, and who is schedualed to die soon. If he survives, then he gets a full pardon. If he dies, the outcome is no different than it would have been otherwise.

Mythbusters + Running Man = TV Awesome! :techman:

No, but they should at least make exception for other electronics, which don't really do anything at all.

Indeed... They should allow other electronics to be used (iPods, GameBoys, laptops, etc)... Cell phones should be right out, though... not for any safety reasons, just customer satisfaction... As of crying babies, bad movies, and small portioned meals aren't bad enough, I don't want to hear some jackass screaming into their phone for hours on end...

If they must relax that stricture, at least only allow text messaging on vibrate mode, so everyone else doesn't have to hear it...

Anyway, enough derailment...

Yeah, I don't see how this particular myth was any more stupid than some of the others tested over the years, either... I don't fault the guys, either... as, in this case, viewer demand was ultimately responsible for this one... It could be worse... (well, not worse, but about the same)... they could have tested Gun kata from the movie Equilibrium.... talk about completely implausible.
