Mystery Games

Kathy Rain is a pretty good point 'n click adventure game. A university student returns to her small town after many years away when her grandfather dies under mysterious circumstances. She investigates. I haven't finished it yet so I can't say whether it has a good ending or not, but I'm engrossed.

I've already completed all the games suggested here. Maybe I should just stop being such a dork.
I was on my way to being pretty drunk when I posted that, I was trying to find something for my partner to play, she's never been into video games in a big way, but has a handful of things she really likes. Life is Strange, Prof. Layton, Her Story and the first Harry Potter game. Plus she's obsessed with murder mysteries, so she's always asking me to find creepy, murder mystery games, but I never know what to suggest that fit her absurd preferences. Especially since she didn't care for Broken Sword when I tried to get her to play it, which knocked me for six.

I LOVE Wadjet Eye, I get every release when I can, much like with Lucas Arts back in the day. If you haven't already you should pick up Disavowed, it's set in the same universe as the Blackwell's, cam out earlier this year.
I take it she has already played Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments?
oh, and Murdered: Soul Suspect I suppose
ETA: The Wolf Among Us also qualifies as a murder mystery, yeah? LA Noir (at least in parts) would maybe also qualify
Yep, I plan on eventually doing that. In fact, first time I noticed the new game was when going to their website to find the links to the Blackwell series
I feel they're one of the few developers faithful to the genre, yet they keep finding new ways to innovate with new gameplay ideas.
A few more I've thought about:
The Raven or as it's sometimes called Legacy of a Master Thief. It's got a pretty good story and a rather interesting twist that I really didn't see coming.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is pretty interesting. A bit more of an exploration game with a mystery to solve.
Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller taking the form of an exploration sidescroller. What makes this one interesting is how the story develops over the choice of dialogue which feels completely natural.

Have you played Amnesia: The Dark Decent?
I love Firewatch (amazing voice direction and performances!) but I wouldn't exactly call it a mystery (the "mystery" is implied at best)
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
That's more of a horror/action game and less mystery.
Oh, have you tried the Sherlock Holmes series by Frogware? They've got quite a few out there now as they've been doing them for quite a while now and you've got a surprising amount of freedom in them.
Since I just finished it, Tacoma also fits into that category.
This is from the 80’s but the “Deja Vu” series. Basically you are a boxer-turned-private-eye in 1945/46 (game 1 allows you to read a newspaper with a headline talking about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and game 2 takes place within a month to two months) who wakes up with no memory, and you have to find the antidote for your memory loss or you will die and then figure out who framed you for the murder of your former manager. Then in game 2, you find out that your manager had been involved with the mafia, and now a gangster thinks that you have some money that he lent your manager and he has you kidnapped from your apartment in Chicago and brought you to Las Vegas. The first game, “Deja Vu A Nightmare Comes True” was on the Mac & DOS machines in the 80’s and was also ported to the NES. “Déjà Vu II Lost in Las Vegas” was also on Mac/DOS. Both games were later issued on the Gameboy Color as “Deja Vu 1 & 2 The Casebooks Of Ace Harding”.
