Mysteries You Lose Sleep Over

How did Dharma manage to build so many stations and last so long on the island before the Others attacked them and wiped them out? I mean those stations are all over the island and they must have taken months or longer to build each one. So... How did they manage to do that? Why did the Others let them get that far?

1. The stations were largely below-ground to begin with, allowing Dharma to build up strength in secret.

No, we saw in one of the time jumps that the Swan station was being dug out and it was a huge project so it must have taken a long time to build and then it must have been covered/buried afterwords.

2. Dharma was on the Island before the Others.
When was this eve mentioned? That can't be true. We know Dharma was formed in the 60's by Hanso. But we've always thought that the Others were there for centuries. Either from the Black Rock, or earlier (the 4 toed statue). We now know for sure that the Others were on the island in 1954, years before Dharma was created.

Dharma showed up heavily armed and loaded for war. After all, they knew about how the US expeditionary force from 1954 was never heard from again! The Hostiles couldn't stop them at first. Especially when they figured out a way to repel Cerebus! In the end it was only through a fifth column infiltration of the Tempest that they managed to beat the invaders.

What's weird is that the "controls" for Cerebus were beneath Ben's house and the Cerebus security fence was around the Dharma Camp.

So... Does that mean that Dharma built the fence to keep Cerebus out even though they had the "controls" of it right there under what would eventually become Ben's house?

Did Dharma take over that location on purpose because the controls were there?

Was the Dharma village built at the same location where we saw the Other's tent city in "Jughead"?

From the creator comments, Ben can call Cerebus in but he can't really control it. So I guess it's more of an alarm call to lure it in. So when Dharma found out about it, they took that location from them and built their base over it so the Others couldn't get to it, then built the Sonic Fence to keep Cerebus and Others away from it.

My 3 main mysteries I want answered in this order are:

Jacob
Richard
Smoke Monster

I just watched "The Little Prince" again in preparation of "This Place is Death" and one thing occurred to me: Why was Sayid coming to save Hurley?

He was asking the Dart Guy who he worked for, so he doesn't know who's trying to get them. But how did he know that Hurley (and maybe himself) were in danger?

On the IMDb board, someone raised the biggest mystery of all:

When do they poop? They hiking through the jungle for several days straight, while being ripped through time. We never see them stop for a bathroom break.

What if it wasn't meant to keep Smokey out, but was actually a super advanced cage to trap Smokey IN?
