MySpace LCARS

I just finished a complete redesign of my MySpace page. As you can see, I decided to give it the look and functionality of an LCARS display. In a previous version of this design, I used a lot of Animated GIFs to give it an appropriate amount of "action." But, it never really functioned the way I wanted it to.

So, I decided that if I was going to do this, I was going to do it properly.

My new design was created using Adobe Flash CS3 professional. Basically, it is a single SWF file. Check it out!

Nicely done David :bolian:

The blue theme is a nice variation on the multi-colour versions we see on tv.

I thought that location map was a bit slow though. And after the wait, a tad disappointing that it didn't zoom right into your humble abode. :)

Well done.

Well you can... for FREE!

Have you tried this: LCARS

It works very efficiently, as an alternative desktop for windows, but I think its awkward to use. I don't use it.

The more functional user interfaces I see that are made to resemble LCARS displays, the more evident it is to me that LCARS displays aren't effective user interfaces. This isn't a criticism of their design, since they predate even Mac OS 5 and Windows 2.0.

I agree. All those rows of bright buttons distract the user's eye too much, making you feel lost in a sea of colours and shapes.

This brings me back to my very first post here on trekbbs.

The location map was a problem for many reasons. My first design started with a full view of the Earth, which zoomed into North America, which zoomed into the Southern United States, so on and so forth. Ultimately, it zoomed in about 6 or 7 times until you saw a satellite view of the city. It looked really good, but I quickly discovered that my SWF file was way too large. It wouldn't even load on the page.

So, I tried cutting back on a few other things. Nothing worked until I cut the location map to one simple zoom. I hated having to cut it, but I was forced to concede.

I have noticed that it runs a little slow. That may just be the server I have it loaded on, however. I decided not to zoom all the way into "my humble abode" simply because it isn't that impressive. I live in an apartment complex. Besides, I didn't really want people to know where I lived :)

I was half expecting something like in 'the survivors', a little square field in the middle of nowhere. :)

Wow! Really nice work. I'm not a huge fan of LCARS in general, but you did a fantastic job on replicating the look for your page. Easily the most original MySpace mage design ever! Bravo!
