Myriad Universe 3 - a wishlist

As was announced at Shore Leave, a third volume of the Myriad Universes series has already been commissioned (expected for release in November 2009). Not long after finishing Echoes and Refractions, I started thinking about the authors and stories I would like to see in this next volume. I posted those ideas on my blog, but thought I'd present it here as well, to see what people here were looking for in future installments...

Authors

The key, I think, to a successful Myriad Universes story is world-building - establishing the changed universe succinctly and with a high degree of realism. All of the authors I'd like to see in Myriad Universes 3 have that as a strength.

Probably above all, I'd love to see Olivia Woods tackle a story - her brief look at alternative versions of Benjamin Sisko in Fearful Symmetry packed a huge amount of characterisation and timeline information into a few short paragraphs. Maybe we could hear more about the Celestial Union, or Dr. Sisko of the Daystrom Institute...

David R. George III also did a good job exploring alternate timelines in Provenance of Shadows, looking at the timeline that resulted from McCoy's actions in "The City on the Edge of Forever". His work is also often epic in scope, yet very personal in content, and certainly lengthy...

Other authors I'd like to see taking a shot at the "what-if"? Well, Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore always produce high-quality and highly-detailed novels - as does David Mack. The pairing of Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin would also create a strong story. Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens are the quintessential "epic" writers. Finally, I'm always wondering if Diane Duane would return to Trek fiction. She did write a piece for the second volume of the manga, so it could be a possibility.

And, obviously, any of the authors from the first two volumes would definitely be welcomed back for the third - although perhaps they should be saved for a fourth (or even fifth) volume, allowing more authors to be spotlighted.

Stories

Keeping a good mix of stories is crucial to the ongoing success of the concept. The galaxy-encompassing epics that have largely been produced so far could be contrasted with more personal stories, which have less of an impact on the world, but more on the people involved. In addition, a mixture of divergence points based on events that occured within the series (along the lines of Marvel's What If...? line) should be mixed with original digressions.

Exploring more of the alternate timelines seen in the various series could also be done. My personal wish is to see the history of the Federation-Klingon War seen in "Yesterday's Enterprise" explored. Of course, having my own ideas on how that timeline evolves (going so far as to try and write the story myself...) might affect my reception of such a tale. And there's only one author I would want to write it, to be honest. Keith R.A. DeCandido is perhaps the greatest writer of the Klingon race, and he's already detailed the history of our timeline at the point of divergence, in The Art of the Impossible. He's the natural fit for the piece.

Regardless of who gets chosen, or what they choose to write, I am confident that Myriad Universes 3 will be as intriguing and thought-provoking as the first two volumes were. Pocket Books has a good thing going here...

So, what would you like to see in the next volume? (Remember, anything detailed about story ideas is a no-no...)

Yeah, I'd love to see more explorations of existing alternate timelines too. I've always thought it would be cool to get a story about the Endgame future Janeway's longer journey home. As for authors, I'd love to see David Mack, Wardimore and David R. George III do stories.

Voyager's Year of Hell always intrigued me. I'd like to see Greg Cox's take on it.
Picard got to see what his life would have been like if he didn't get stabbed in the heart by a Naussican-perhaps a different outcome from that event, as it was a life-changing event.(I'm furiously stomping ideas back into the darker recesses of my mind as I write this). Bashir had genetic "surgery" as a child-another life-changing event. An alternate outcome to that would be interesting. Or exploration of one of the universes glimpsed in Parallels might be fun. Leighton's coup offers possibilities. Also, the simple idea of a character that died surviving instead could offer up a few juicy story lines. Dukat's daughter, LAL, the other ship commander from Doomsday Machine or even that psychotic captain from the Yang-Koms TOS episode-you get the idea.
As for authors-I'm not listing any personal choices cause I don't want to hurt the feelings of the ones I leave out-I'll save that for my review commentaries of their individual work.

I would love another story in the Dark Mirror continuity. Or indeed any timeline where the Terran Empire still exists.

I wouldn't mind reading about how things would have worked out if the 2024 Bell Riots hadn't occurred and how the only things near to the Defiant in the 2371 altered timeline came to be Romulan.

i think all of those ideas would be intriguing as well, perhaps several more volumes of the myriad universe? As was proved in parallels, theres so many ways ONE action changed can lead to. heck theres a point in pretty much every ep of voyager where something really radical could have altered their arrival home, or made it even not happen. Although the more recent story that would be interesting....if data had been the one to come back to the enterprise instead of picard.....THAT would be interesting.. maybe data would have been captain, worf first officer and then the borg woulda been really screwed if data turned back on his emotion chip(or even for that matter got it back) and remembered what the borg queen tried to make him do!

A story that I'd like to see, tackled by someone like David R. George or Christopher L. Bennett, is a relatively small change :- what if Harriman had been the one to head to deflector control. Possibly no real change at first - but it would be Harriman in the Nexus instead of Kirk, so Generations might end differently and Kirk tackling the Cardassian Wars could have been interesting too, so DS9 might have turned out differently as well.

Here's a thought-pick one "turning point" and give it to 3 different authors. Make them all start from the same place and see where they end up. Now that would be an interesting read!

That's a GREAT idea. And I think the authors should be chosen based on being quite different in how their writing styles are. (Yes, I know all of them are different, but some are more similar than others.)

I'm thinking a line up of something like David Mack, Peter David, and Christopher L. Bennett.

Or perhaps: DRGIII, KRAD, and 'Wardilmore'

I would also love to see more of the Dark Mirror Universe. Or even more
of that on Universe where Jack Crusher survived (Fro Q-Squared)
