My View Of New Star Trek

I think it's a backhanded compliment to say "This movie captures the spirit of 'Star Trek.'"

This movie IS "Star Trek." It isn't a re-make, like "Battlestar Galactica." It's not capturing the spirit; it's continuing the spirit.

It is a sequel. The story is ongoing.

Yes, there are some "fans" who only like one specific part of "Star Trek," Like "TNG" fans, or "Voyager" fans, or "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" fans (I don't know what alternate universe those nutjobs come from).

But there are a lot of fans of "Star Trek" as an ongoing series, including me, and I am glad that new episodes are continuing to be made in this four-decade-old series.

I don't have to choose whether to like TOS or "Star Trek XI," because they're all part of the same series. It's all one story, and I am a fan of it.

I agree with TrekGuide.com

I personally am a huge TNG fan, but even TNG had some episodes that were downright stinkers.

TOS would have to be my second favorite series, and I thought the new movie captured the feel of the old series almost with laser precision. It just updated the cornball stuff that just doesn't work anymore, like the silly cardboard sets. I mean, hell, they had an Orion Green Girl in the movie!! That's how deep they were willing to go in the new movie to follow TOS as much as possible, and it's kinda miss, but more hit than miss.

nuStar Trek is better than DS9, VOY and ENT, it is IMO around the same level as TOS, and TNG beats it in quality by like a hair.

I'm watching it today with my dad again, it's worth a couple of viewings on the big screen.

I thought the wig and the green make-up on her looked awful.

Including an Orion female isn't exactly what I would call deep. Hell, for all the bashing ENT received it not only included Orion slave women(with much better paint applications) but it also did better job of capturing the feel of TOS especially in season four where the writers actually tried to use elements from TOS/TNG/DS9 in appropriate ways that serviced the story instead of just being random namedropping like is the case in XI with Delta Vega or including a tribble or mentioning Archer & Porthos.
nuStar Trek is better than DS9, VOY and ENT
It really isn't fair to compare a two hour film to a multi-year series but DS9's Circle trilogy and Occupation Arc and the Final Chapter arc, VOY's Scorpion two parter and Caretaker pilot, ENT's Vulcan trilogy and the final three episodes of the Xindi arc were all better than this film as far as writing and pure entertainment.

DS9 did big screen things on the small screen quite well. When Betazed was invaded it carried some weight. When 800 million Cardassians were slaughtered it was gripping. Orci & Kurtzman could take some pointers from DS9 in how to do something shocking that works both viscerally as well as intellectually & emotionally.

I like this movie and I'm totally okay with the new timeline and the new possibilities it brings. To me, it would be nice if a Trek movie didn't break any prior canon stuff, but I view creative license as a more important thing so I'm okay with any deviations with prior canon so long as it serves the story. This movie doesn't really break canon in any major way, so I'm happy on the canon front. I love action movies too, and STXI definately met and exceeded my quota for set pieces.

The only issue I feel a little sad about is the lack of some thought provoking Science Fiction element or story telling.

Adding one thing that's not an echo here...

I think the whole "Old Timers" thing is being stretched beyond the truth; generally, what I've seen here is the small percentage of true "Old Dogs" that are vitrolic about the film are FAR outweighed by small percentage of TNGeners that somehow think they have a better understanding of the Holy Trek Canon than the guys who have been on the train since it left the station.

With only 3 seasons to work with, us white muzzles depended on the lack of canon to keep the show alive for ten years. I reference this - something that most people who missed the time should read to understand how Star Trek was kept alive and viable during the big empty.

oh, oh, thanks soooooooo very much for that link, perigee! it's gold! :bolian:

i too grew up with tos , and i love this new version because at the heart of tos is the crew and the adventure they share and, i want to enjoy the way trek should be on the big screen .For me this is a chance to see captian kirk and co in action again.
Plus any time i can sit down and watch tos on dvd and not feel its lost or changed.
