My Trek Through Enterprise

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

Yes, it's like some of you all mentioned. Was there really a need for Marauders? I don't mind children so long as the only reason they are there isn't to drum up sympathy or some specific, usually teary-eyed, emotion. Nog and Jake were able to do that for me in DS9, but this kid wasn't. It also didn't help that he didn't seem like the best actor. Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense this kid was not. I don't recall minding Wesley as much as I've heard other people have, but then I watched that series in the latter seasons when feedback might have been used to reduce his role/annoying tendencies. I kind of liked him, IIRC.

Seventh, well, that one did give us a different kind of Vulcan to think about. I'm just glad that T'Pol doesn't have to carry around guilt anymore.

Did Trip just say that making the Captain's chair comfy is just as important as Malcolm coming up with a tactical warning system and protocols for the ship? Then he says he doesn't have time to cater to T'Pol's "whims" while he's still working on a seat. This episode was definitely not Trip's finest hour. Luckily we find that there is a virus we can blame for this because just about everyone starts going batty at about this time. At least we got the warning/alert system and protocols out of this one.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

As far as Crew Goes Crazy episodes go, I remember Singularity being one of the better examples. At least better than the sex-focussed Fascination or Naked Now, though not quite matching the all-out paranoia of Dramatis Personae. There's just no beating Sisko's random-ass obsession with clocks.

Trip's "bag full of cats" line scores points with me on its own. I still bust that out in conversation now and then.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

I don't think I ever saw Naked Now, but I did like Dramatis Personae. I guess my problems with Singularity were that it was plodding and mostly that by the time it was evident that this was a virus or something affecting the entire crew, I was already annoyed. "Bag full of cats," did work, btw. :)

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

If I was running a space ship based on exploration and I have sensitive equipment I didn't want to fall into the hands of primitive natives, I'd build these things with a short out device that can be activated by radio. This isn't even beyond our capabilities today. Or just cut your losses being if you dropped a cell phone on medieval Earth, there' not much they'll be able to do with it, especially when the battery runs out. But what do I know?

As for Singularity, yeah it's all been done before. At least they didn't all start randomly having sex.

Naomi Wildman is my favorite Trek kid, but Jake and Nog in youth are perfectly good and they also manage to grow them into adults and still use them well. Trek really isn't as bad with kids as we joke about IMO.. it's just Wesley reflux that makes us tense up when we see one.

Little Green Men it wasn't. But I enjoyed it.

I like the obsessive nature of the virus's effects. It was much better than random rage and/or sex effecting everyone.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

^ I do think there were some interesting concepts in the episode, and random sex/rage on top of that would have been a nightmare. I'm with you in being glad that didn't happen. I have to say that although Little Green Men was nice, I've only seen it once. It's just among the few DS9 episodes I have no desire to re-watch. Maybe if I see it again that could change. I don't know.

That's a good idea, but I think they were concerned with reverse-engineering or what have you, and that these people (who are at war) might have access to creating technology they are not ready for. But, like T'Pol said, they ended up "contaminating" them anyway.

Padma Lakshmi - proof that we've made more advanced androids than the government will let on. Pity they have no emotional range whatsoever.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

The first time I saw Precious Cargo I was sitting there saying, "No.. no.. they didn't just do that episode.. "

But now, after multiple viewings, I just pay attention to the underwear scenes.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

Finally a Hoshi episode... and it sucks. She could have been such an interesting character if the writers just tried. I liked the idea of a specialist who's otherwise uncomfortable as all heck in space. But basically she's a glorified receptionist who's primary job is to answer the phone for most of the series.

Precious Cargo... yep, back to the Big Three of Archer, T'Pol and Trip. This time Trip beats the bad guy and saves the Princess. Uninspired episode with the utterly predictable bickering leading to artificial attraction we're expected to buy. Also.. how come every alien in Trek is always physically tougher than humans? Why can't a bad guy harmlessly punch a human for once?

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

I don't mind Vanishing Point. It's not how I wanted Enterprise to examine the weirdness of early transporter tech (did I even want that examination at all? Hmm...) but it's at least less of a bore than season four's Daedalus, and not quite as goofy as TNG's Realm of Fear.

Plus, Hoshi. I can't bring myself to dislike a Hoshi episode, assuming for the moment that there's even such thing as a Hoshi episode. I can't think of too many others.

Now, Precious Cargo... that was abysmal.

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

^That's too bad, each character should have some episodes that are strictly dedicated to them.

Time to dust away a few cobwebs and post the next episode.

The Catwalk

I don't know that this was bad, just boring. It took a few tries to get through it. The whole "disturbing you" thing seemed interesting when Archer having earbuds/headphones and T'Pol turning the sound off of her PADD could have eliminated that scene altogether. I would guess that in the future that might still be possible. It got better toward the end, though. I liked Trip inviting T'Pol to movie nights on Tuesdays. That was very nice.

This episode was alright. Some of the earlier scenes of Trip talking to the alien and the alien talking back, without the use of a translator, were interesting. I’m not sure exactly how they understood each other without using gestures. And it was kind of obvious that his type of “water” wasn’t going to work for Trip. Their small climb together and braving it against the elements until help arrived reminds me of DS9’s The Ascent. Still, this was better than the last episode for sure, and it had a nice ending.

Grade: C plus

Re: My Trek Through Enterprise: Season One

What was funny for me reading this was that I had completely forgotten this episode existed.

A touch of Arena, a bit of The Ascent.
