My Thoughts on Immigration

That's not really what I meant. I suspect a lot of peole don't consider you a "real" immigrant becasue of who you are.

It's the same with my Stepfather. He's British and came to Canada in the 70s but no one really considers him an immigrant.

Immigration is the very core of the American success story -- without question; and it should ALWAYS be vigorously encouraged. I applaud the arrival of every immigrant who raises his hand to become a citizen of the greatest country on earth.

One question I've always had: how exactly does an illegal immigrant pay taxes? Who are they paying taxes to? Why is the recipient of these taxes not catching the fact that the taxes are not coming from a legal citizen?

I expect they're paying sales taxes when they buy things if nothing else.

They sometimes also pay payroll tax at least I assume and whatever else in taxes are directly taken off an employee's pay check in the USA; if you think about that journalist who "came out" as illegal a while ago for example, I don't think the Washington Post pays its salaries in cash at the end of the day...

I get marked out as not local the minute I open my mouth, actually.
It's the gold teeth, right?

I'm surprised it took 28 posts for somebody to get there (even if post 19 played with the sentiment).

It's more than I expected.

Well said Shameless.

I and my siblings are children of an American woman (born in California) and a Lebanese man (born in Lebanon and who emigrated to the US). I most certainly would not be here had it not been for immigration.

Likewise, I wholly encourage the concept and process of immigration and am disappointed with the the underlying hatred I keep seeing from those (usually on the right) campaigning and advocating against illegal immigrants.

I find it quite sad that the uncercurrent of hatred that seems to motivate and inform the politics of so many people on issues like this and health care and equal marriage.

People are people. No one person is more special, important, or deserving of more basic equality or rights than another, yet we constantly find ways to bring our fellow citizens down, limit them and restrict the quality of life they might be able to achieve here. Its disgusting.

People are people.

Likely if they're working, money is taken out of their paycheck every week to pay in to taxes as well.

I am all in favor of legal immigration. I'm also in favor of qualifying immigration. For example, if one immigrates to the U.S. illegally, and becomes a part of our culture (gets a job, raises a family, pays taxes, starts a business, stuff like that), then I believe they should be fast-tracked to legal status. That may not be completely open in every way, but I feel it's a fair balance.

I'm mostly in agreement here. I'm also very grateful that my parents were able to come to this country legally. We've had a good life here.
As it turns out, all of my grandparents were immigrants, so my family's American experience only goes back roughly a century. All of them are long gone, but like you, I am forever appreciative that they came here :)

Screw immigrants, coming here and committing crimes and taking jobs from hardworking Americans and corrupting the youth and doing drugs and... and... shit, what was I saying? I think those are the typical anti-immigrant talking points.

I'm just fine with immigration, and I think even illegal immigrants should be handled a bit more sensitively. If someone has come here and gotten a job and had kids, how can we deport them? They have come to help build this country and contribute to our economy and culture. Save the deportations for the drug smugglers and other criminals who haven't come here to do anything productive. Get illegal immigrants documented and part of the system so they can't be exploited and can make their status here legal.

I say that as someone whose family has been here since before the Revolution, so I don't particularly have a dog in the fight--I am not at all a recent immigrant. But "E pluribus unum" is one of our national mottos and we should absolutely live by it. It's a good thing.
