My single-reason theory Enterprise didn't last

^^ Very nice!

I like "Faith of the Heart," because the lyrics do embody what the show is about for me, but I also like "Archer's Theme." And I really enjoy hearing Captain Archer narrating the "Space...the final frontier..." as well.

Thanks for putting this up!

It didn't last because Les Moonves took over UPN and expected it to perform like a "real" network. As a result, he replaced a lot of higher concept shows with reality shows, which were cheaper to produce and pulled in huge numbers.

That's why ENT was cancelled.

For fun, the folks at startrek.com put this together at the beginning of Season 4, using "Archer's Theme" and the traditional way of opening a Star Trek show with an Enterprise. I think it would have been great:

Wow I forgot all about that. Isn't it great?? I remember hoping when they first posted it that it would end up being the new opening credits. And each week I was disappointed.

The intro is great, visuals-wise it tops all the others because it's actually...something. The song is dreadful though. I have to mute it.

The theme song. It was just a horrendous, sucking the bacteria-off-of-the-bottom-of-the-LA River, insulting to our intelligence display of aural diarrhea on a piece of stale wonderbread ever to grace a show so great. :scream:

I loved Enterprise, but that theme song just kills me. I really believe the death of the show was because of this. I hope so at least.

Theme song was OK. There were many reasons why ENT was canceled, and the idea of theme song being one of them sounds a bit silly to me.

I don't watch shows for the theme song, it is just a something to make quick TiVo FF over. I didn't even know they changed the theme. I think the only time I ever watched the opening outside of the first episode was during the alternate universe episode.

Four years is a good run for any TV show, only about 10% make it past season 2.

My single theory why it only ran for 4 seasons....UPN!

I like the theme song and I make everyone be quiet and stop talking while it's on so I can soak up the whole effect. My co-viewers think it's ridiculous--"HOW many times have you heard this??"

I prefer ENT failure theories that are about how UPN sucked, not how ENT sucked. Because it didn't. Not even a tiny bit

Some 2 or 3 years ago, after a night of agonizing toothache, I was sitting on a dental chair at my dentist's, waiting for the anesthesia to kick in... And all of a sudden, "When my heart will take me" ("Faith of the heart," whatever) started playing on the radio (which I barely even noticed was on). Pain subsiding and Dianne Warren's corny/beautiful lyrics made that 'WTF moment' a very special one indeed. :vulcan::rommie:

I don't see any connection between the theme song and the show's failure.... but then again I liked both, so..... *shrugs*

"It's been a long road.....getting from there to here....because baby since you left me....I've been shedding my tears.....I can still smell your perfume......"

My all time favorite of all the alternate versions i've seen. I've always liked Archer's theme - felt it would've been more appropriate in general for the opener - and gave a sense of scope to the general mission. The "Faith of the Heart" intro along with the subject matter of Season 3 in particular was an oxymoron, IMHO.

I also used to wait and see if each week in S4 after that post if BB would at least have endulged us (again in my opinion) with a more fitting opening that didn't so often confuse the tone of the show.

I would hope that the theme in and of itself didn't kill Enterprise - it's certainly easy enough to press mute and look at the visuals or skip it on your TIVO.

(There was also a fan made alternate intro promoting a Season 5 that included Jeff Combs in the credits - that was a enjoyable to see as well - but that's way off topic.)

This is just my opinion, but if a theme song makes or breaks a series, then the fan base is pretty shallow. I found that the theme song fit in wonderfully with the message of the series. When I frist started watching Enterprise on Sci-Fi nabout a year ago, my daughter (16) said "Since when did Star Trek get cool music"? She eventually became a fan.

I wouldn't call Enterprise a failure, but think the main reason reason it didn't go seven seasons is because of the Nit Picky Star Trek fan base that is so hung up on canon that it can't see the forest for the trees. There were also creative issues as well.

Whoa, not to offend your daughter, but Star Trek has a history of having uber-cool music, just take Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner & Dennis McCarthy as the prime examples of awesomeness. Maybe at the age of 16 she's yet to become fond of classical music, and I certainly hope she does.

I guess that's a little too much to hope for at this stage of the game. At her age I was somewhat of a trained musician with an ear for all music. She didn't want to go down the same path.

I understand what you're saying, but that's not the point I was trying to make. The use of a popular song (Faith of the Heart) that fit the message of the series combined with the historical footage of the shows opening attracted her attention. She watched the series with me and became a fan. After a year she has been through Enterprise, all the movies, has been to a convention with me and is slowly working her way through TOS. This is a girl who once called me a geek for my collection of Enterprise replicas. Not bad.

one of the big reasons the show didnt last is how ratings were counted was different then now.
the show was seriously hurt by the weekend showings not being folded into its ratings and by time shifting not being taken into account.
