My role in Harry Kim's belated promotion ;-)

USS Triumphant

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So, this year my family and I went to Dragoncon in Atlanta, and today was the last day of the convention. Our last celebrity panel was for Deep Space Nine, and consisted of Nana Visitor, Nicole de Boer, Tony Todd, and James Darren. And Garrett Wang, who was on the panel but mainly there because he was Dragoncon's Trek Track director this year.

After the panel, my son needed to hit the restroom before we left to hit the road, and one of the staffers pointed us down a hallway. At the end of the hallway was an open eating area with several exits, and so we stopped to ask one of the people there directions again. Before they could answer, I hear someone from over by another hallway say, "If you're looking for the restrooms, they're over here." I turn to look, and it's Garrett Wang. Erm, whoah.

So we head over to that hall just about in front of the men's room and Garrett tells us that men's is here, and women's is over there. My daughter is getting ready to ask him to get a picture with him when we here my wife make a noise of surprise behind us. Coming out of a side door into the hallway is Nicholas Brendon (Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer)!

So my daughter asks if she can get a pic with both of them and Wang says only if we will take a picture of him with Brendon first, 'cause he's a fan and he's been busy with the Trek Track and hasn't had an opportunity to see much else at the con. So we do, and then I take the pic we wanted, and Brendon goes on his way, and then Wang goes to head on down the hallway, too.

I start to tell my son, "Wow. Ensign Kim just told you where the restrooms were!" but thinking about the fact that he might still be within earshot, I amended it to "Lieutenant Kim". Still kinda moving down the hall he turned to look back at me and said, "Thanks for promoting me!"

Okay, so I'm a 36 year old father of two, and I know it's kinda silly, but still - SQUEE! That has got to be the coolest Trek experience I have ever had - I promoted Ensign Kim!

I always like Harry. Too many Harry haters out there...
Wang seemed like a really nice guy, too, who was really into the fandom, both in the panel and in the hallway there. Not at all the sour-grapes sort that I have frequently read him depicted as on the board here.

Unlike Beltran, who always boldly made fun of the fans and the show, Wang had the balls to publicly criticize a producer. For racism. Personally I think that he had reason. But as near as I can tell, most people seemed to think that Wang had no right to say anything, unless they believed that it was incontestably true. Personally I think they would only accept wearing a swastika or burning a cross would be uncontestably true. But, that's just me.

Harry is hated because he was nice, and nice guys aren't cool. Some people who prefer cool to nice, but still don't actively hate nice. They seem to be in a minority on this bbs.

Just curious if adding a post will cause the board to straighten out its counting.

Edit: Apparently not. Oh, well, I think this thread was going to be short-lived, anyway.

Your extra post wasn't a complete failure, this thread showed up on the new posts section and I got to read it. Sounds like you had a great time; it is always so nice to have friendly encounters with the Trek people. How was the panel?
