My Reaction to TOS in General, and a Shatner Story

Greetings, everybody once again, coming to you umm this is your friendly neighborhood movie fan, umm i just watched a youtube video by actor william shatner where he described the history of the very first star trek film titled star trek the motion picture it was released in 1979 directed by robert wise who famously helmed the sound of music and he was takling about how the film was made and why he believed it bombed and so i thought as a fan of the later uh trek installments that i would give my thoughts on the original series a little bit. now the original series ran frmo 66 to 69 i was not born until 1980 ok so ya know my knowledge of the original series and its characters uhh growing up yuo know for the first few years of my life was extraordinarily limited uh i did not watch uh the re-runs of the original show uh on a regular basis uh my cousin did because he was a big fan uh but it was late at night and i was really young so ya know i wasn't usually awake and uhhh when i was awake and i did see it, i didn't really enjoy or understand you know what i was seeing you know it seemed tob e you know very hokey very cheesey ya know almost as if ya know the actors involved ya know knew that ya know everything was supposed to be treated as a joke uhh ya know for a an appropriate uhhh an appropriate common point uhh made later on down the road would probably be the mel brooks spoof spaceballs which primarily focusses on making fun of star wars but it also homages star trek, the wilzard of oz, ya know a couple of other things. umm. and it just seemed to be very non serious umm. now in shatner's video he concluded that after the motion picture's failure it was the television division of paramount uhh that was responsible for the making of the first sequel which was called star trek II the wrath of khan and it was the lovers of the original series that turned out to see that and they loved it and as a result the wrath of khan made a ton of money, i think it came out in like '82 made a ton of money and that was the start of like the modern day star trek film franchise. Now, i think that i have only seen the wrath of khan once maybe twice in my whole life. i don't remember that much about it. all i know is that i never saw to the best of my knowledge the original series episode that featured khan uh palyed by ricardo montelban uhh the episode was titled uh space seed and uh the concept for him was that he was the ya know result of ya know genetic cloning they were or experimentation they were trying to create a super soldier uhh which was ya know basically ya know the same core concept as ya know characters like captain america. and uh and so ya know this idea would later be ya know revisited ya know with shows like enterprise where ya know um ya know doctor aric soong played by brent spiner ya know actually is responsible for like a group of ya know 3 uhh super humans who ya know turn traitor and ya know start killing people. ummmmm. but. ya know but. just generally speaking i guess my biggest problem with the original series was its tone. it just seemed like everyone was winking at the camera. ummm and that seemed to be the case with some of the movies too. a lot of people say wrath of khan is the best one i don't know since i can't really comment on that. i don't necessarily share that view but its not through disdain its just a lack of experience with it maybe some day i'll change my mind and watch it i don't know. but at this point at this point in my life um my personal favorites of the original 6 that were made are the search for spock uh the wrath of err the voyage home sorry the fourth one the voyage home and uh the undiscovered country those are the ones that i like umm so 3 4 and 6 those are the ones that i like. uhhh a lot of people hate number 5 which was called the final frontier and that basically involved the enterprises ya know uh attempt to uh to reach ya know the edge of the universe and ya know basically find god umm and the quest was basically the result of a u know terrorist act uh instigated by ya know spock's half brother uhh a vulcan ya know uhh narcissist really named sybok. and ya know it wasn't a bad movie it just ya know uh shatner directed it himself and uh ya know truth be told he wanted to be able to do more with it ya know he wanted a finale that actually involved alien rock creatures ya know rising out of the earth and attacking the crew and ya know this alien ya know being that ya know claimed to be god basically ya know being revealed as like ya know i think i read in one source that it was intended to be like ya know satan in disguise or some version of him. umm. and thats implied in the final film but not stated directly uhmm so ya know it and and when the films when when all six films were recently remastered for the 4k uhd format shatner uh petitioned uh paramount to fund a uh extended uh version of the final frontier so that he could finally complete it the way he wanted to but they turned down his request uhh so ya know the 4k edition is simply the uhh theatrical cut uhmmm anyways so ya know thats basically my thoughts on the ya know original ya know star trek series and uh ya know the films that resulted from it. so ya know having been born in the 80s ya know my intro to the phenomena was the next generation and then i moved on from there but i already addressed that in my previous star trek videos. so. uhhhm thats just my thoughts on the original show so thank you for watching and i'll see you another time. this is your friendly neighborhood movie fan signing off, bye.
If you're going to quote me, at least have the decency to use capitalization and punctuation, instead of making the whole thing look like a giant run-on sentence...because as you can tell by the video that is not how I talk. Your post was a deliberate form of mockery, and as such I will not dignify it beyond this point.

I would almost swear one of them is wearing a prototype 32nd century Command Red uniform.

It's also a joke. We rib one another in here for our eccentricities.

This isn't a place for sacred cows to be presented, so don't expect them to be treated with stern respect.

i was literally typing word for word along with the video. i did not make a mockery. if you think its a mockery, then why not reflect on yourself, since it is literally beat-for-beat your video transcribed.

there was no way to punctuate anything you said, because there was no proper sentence structure or end points, it was one long ramble. i just transcribed it.

does my lack of punctuation in a lot of my own posts make it a mockery of myself? i can type as fast as i can think, punctuation be damend.

If you want me to respond to the meat of your topic, it was regurgitating facts like titles, release dates, and directors, and then opinions from someone who self-admits they have never even seen the show, but can somehow judge it as cheap and hokey and winking at the camera. 80% of the video is just telling facts about the movies. I don't understand what conversation was supposed to come from this.

I just looked at the captions for a couple seconds. It absolutely looks like what Phoenix219 typed, and it was a bit hard to see where it stops and begins a couple times.

Well, that’s one good use of AI tools that I can think of; I asked ChatGPT to generate a summary of the video. If anyone feels they like to discuss the “points” being made in the video …

After transcribing it myself, I am SO much more impressed with ChatGPT and its summary than I ever thought I could be. That thing nailed it on the fucking head lol. Although, it missed about 18 "ya know".... it said 24, but there are at least 42.

Sue me for trying to make things easier to start with. Having a video about my general views in place means people don't have to keep asking the same questions, and I'm not left with the same response. If anything, it allows for more variety out of the gate.

What’s the difference, rereading your points vs. rewatching them? Honestly, I don’t come here for YouTube, if I wanted YouTube, I’d just go there.

After that, I felt compelled to record my own response, so here it is. What do you all think?

If you’re going to continue to do videos, put a damned sheet on your bed. For the love of God. Presentation is important. That has been fucking bothering me since you showed up here.

Okay, folks, I think this thread has gone on long enough. @Moviefan2k4 , this is a discussion board and while sharing a video can be a good way to start a conversation, you truly need to begin the chat. Otherwise, this looks like self-promotion.
It seems, everyone, that you were trying to help @Moviefan2k4 understand how things work here, but a couple of you were coming close to losing your tempers. Remember that we try to have 80s PG standards on the board at large. We also need to have discussions of the original topic. I think this thread has significantly devolved and I am locking it now.
