Hello Friends, Most of you probably don't know that I'm a playwright/screenwriter, but, well, I am. Next week, April 11th to be exact, my play Umbrella open off-Broadway. It's being produced by Alchemy Theater Company of Manhattan and runs until May 4th. A mix of tragedy and comedy, Umbrella is about the loneliness and despair living in a big city and the choices we make to relieve the pressure. Two strangers on a rooftop, one a peeping Tom, the other a cutter, struggle to make a connection, which may fall apart as taboos and secrets are revealed. What began as an act of kindness turns into a war of wills. For more information: http://www.alchemytheatre.org/ And here's the poster:
Congrats. And may the theatre gods grant you an extension. By the way - isn't Lillis a playwright too?
Perhaps. But then there's the whole Equity Actor contract we got with the actors...I don't need Equity coming after me. I ain't got the money. He is indeed. He had a show up in New York City last summer I believe. And we're praying to the gods... Thanks!
Wait, so the actors would need to get paid for the taping? Figures. Not like they would want people to see their work or anything. I mean, it's not like there's an audience of hundreds of millions on the series of tubes that make up the "Internets", including casting agents in LA who probably wouldn't make the trip out to New York... but, I mean, I'm just being a sarcastic ass right now. Not bitter, nope. Not bitter. Anyhoo, good luck. As a PhD student in English and Theatre, maybe I'll be critiquing your play some time in the future.
Break a Leg! NYC way too far to get to with a teacher's schedule and budget. But if ( when must think positive ) I win the lottery I'll see what I can do.
I'm not sure what Equity rules are regarding taping. I think we can do it for archival purposes. But I'm not sure about rebroadcast. It's not in their contract. It's alright. I don't think video taped plays ever look all that great. I hope you critique it with love and care.
That is wonderful, congrats! You must be so excited for the first performance. Very clever poster design there, too.
Wow! Amazing news and major congratulations! And it's especially great that you like the director. May you have a long run and get booted up to the Great White Way. Really. Best possible news! Break a leg! --Ted
Are you guys selling playbooks? I could write something pretentious and, like all sycophant academics, live off your success.
Thanks everyone...one more week to go...we move onto the set next tuesday. Very exciting. No playbooks yet. And sadly, academics probably live better off of playwrights success than playwrights. That's why many playwrights also teach.
