this is my own version of the romulan star empire.
the history is based from various novels, game books and what's been on screen.
This first post is a rough draft so is not quite finished need to add the begining of the romulan empire and up thruogh the next gen era and dominion war but i thought i'd post it up and see what you guys think.

Romulan history
During the Romulan war the Romulan ships were only capable of warp 3 maximum though a few were capable of warp 5 these were very rare, as the war dragged on these became even rarer. However after the war had ended with massive losses on both sides the Romulan navy had gained into their possession a few NX class ships captured from the earth fleet. They kept a ship back for study whilst they learnt how to build the warp system two other ships were stripped of their systems and fitted the systems into two of the Romulan own vessels. These worked well though not after many weeks of tweaking to get the systems to work properly, once they were working well the ships were capable of warp 5.5 but the Romulans couldn’t get to warp six.
Work on the problem slowed dramatically when the Klingons decided to attack. The Romulan navy was sent to stem the invasion and through superior numbers they had pushed the Klingons back in the process they had captured many ships. The Romulan quickly started analysing the ships to find out about their warp propulsion and weapons.
However in a few years the first trade agreement took place between Romulus and the Klingon Empire this helped the Romulan gain transporter technology though the trade agreement wasn’t very productive because before anything meaningful could come of it the four years war broke out between the Klingons and the federation.
The Romulan decided it was in their best interests to sit the war out and see what the outcome would be though they did station a lot of their fleet to the federation border in case the federation attacked them. Meanwhile Romulan scientists had finally managed to break the warp six barrier and begun work on a new type of cruiser to take advantage of the new technology.
The new cruiser known to the federation as a v-8 was refined. Over a couple of years then once the Romulan had perfected their cloaking device they sent one ship across the neutral zone in 2265 to test the federation response, this vessel had destroyed several outposts before a federation cruiser arrived, after a short battle the Romulan cruiser self destructed to avoid capture but not before it’s message buoy was sent back to Romulus.
While the information from the buoy was analysed the Romulan signed a second treaty with the Klingons. This had a more beneficial effect to the Romulan and the Klingons traded a few battle cruisers to the Romulan these were traded with the condition that they were not to be used on the Klingon Romulan border.
In return the Romulan traded a few of their early model cloaking devices.
When the Romulan took delivery of the first batch of cruisers they immediately sent 90% of them on their borders, the Romulan commanders not liking them seeing them as enemy ships grudgingly had to admit they were better ships then their own designs. The second batch were shipped without any Klingon warp engines these were supplied by the Romulan the commanders of these vessels liked them seeing them as superior to the Klingon types. The batch two were renamed storm birds and served well until 2280 when a group of Romulan and Klingon designers sat down and discussed a new ship capable of defeating their main enemy the federation. After much arguing and testing the s-11 as the Romulans call it was born, each side made 6 ships each then went their separate ways to get the official governmental yards to begin official construction. But unknown to the Romulans the Klingons weren’t satisfied with just a scout they wanted bigger ships so begun construction on bigger clones at first these reports were dismissed as rumours by the Romulan high command and were quickly pushed aside as plans were drawn up with the Klingon government for a joint attack on the federation.

This attack was doomed from the start as the Romulan realised they were getting the raw end of the deal, they were also not happy with the Klingon non aggression treaty so they begun small scale raids into Klingon space of course the Klingons responded in kind but war was never declared. Then in 2285 a report from a Romulan convoy survivor stated a large s-11 styled ship de-cloaked in front of the convoy and destroyed all 6 ships before the escort could effectively respond after examining the recorder buoys from the wreckage the Romulan command was shocked that a cruiser sized s-11 attacked they quickly discovered other reports the Romulans were annoyed the Klingons hadn’t told them about the scaling up of the ship and soon started building a new class of cruiser the v-31 winged defender. This vessel was easily the equal of anything the Klingons or federation had at the time. Also patrols were stepped up along the Klingon border with many v-11 storm birds being assigned here against the treaty conditions.
They also started construction of a battleship class known as the nova the Romulan were pleased with their new ships in fact when the first one was built they sent it on it’s trials on it’s own, the result was elements of the white flame battle group from the Klingons found it and destroyed it. The Romulan were miffed is an under statement but they quickly begun a ‘b’ version of the nova with heavier weapons.
In 2311 admiral Danarus received reports of a secret research station in federation space he sent scouts to the Tomed system to find out what was going on when the scouts arrived they found a station orbiting the fourth planet docked to this station was a Miranda class starship which had a massive hole at the rear of the primary hull when scanned the scout captain found a high amount of radiation coming from the ship he reported back it may have been a weapons failure, the signal stopped before admiral Danarus could find out more but he knew enough that something was going on so he marshalled his fleet while waiting for the Romulan command to give the go ahead for the attack but they were uncertain as they suspected it may be a federation trap to draw their fleet into an ambush. This the admiral considered was giving the federation time to develop the weapons that could defeat the Romulan people, with this he decided to attack at once and in his flagship, the nova class battleship Dark hawk he led his fleet of ships under cloak into federation space he quickly attacked the station. But before the station exploded they had got off a distress signal so as the admiral started to bombard the planet three ships warped into the system, the u.s.s Tirpitz an excelsior class cruiser and two constellation cruisers arrived.
The constellations were quickly dispatched while the Tirpitz was crippled only the arrival of the 4th fleet prevented the Tirpitz from being destroyed. The Romulan fleet withdrew but only three had managed to get back to Romulan space the flagship was so badly damaged that admiral Danarus transferred his flag to a winged defender scuttling his original ship, the Romulan command were not happy and removed him from command.
Once the treaty of Algernon was ratified the Romulan seemed to withdraw from the galactic scene though in fact they were busy dealing with the Gorn who had chosen this time to launch an attack not knowing about the Tomed incident.
The Romulan fleet rushed to stem the flood of Gorn ships after some bitter battles the Gorn were pushed back by the superior technology of the Romulan fleet soon the Romulans were poised to strike into the heart of Gorn space but after capturing a mere half a dozen systems they stopped, this puzzled the Gorn fleet commanders but they also welcomed the pause as they knew they had few ships left to hold off the Romulans let alone beat them. Unknown to them the Romulan had bumped into another race to the spin ward edge of their space, this race called Progens at first were cautious about the Romulan ship entering their system but after a few friendly messages by subspace they welcomed the Romulan into their system upon arriving at the Progen home world the Romulan discovered many artificial singularities they were surprised to learn that it was the Progen ships that were the cause of the readings when asked the Progens told them they had harnessed the power of the singularities the Romulan were intrigued by the possibilities and the Progens gladly taught them the process.

The Romulan quickly fitted a few systems into their novas and found the energy produced was very impressive so much so that they decided all future shipping would be powered by the singularities. There was one draw back however, that was nothing smaller then the novas could field the early versions this in the Romulan commands mind meant building larger ships which secretly they enjoyed the idea that larger ships would frighten the federation and Klingons into not attacking.
Soon a large cruiser design appeared in the Romulan navy known as fire hawks which were twice the size of the novas. After a few years the Romulan government felt it was time to strike at the enemies of the Romulan people, so praetor Dralath ordered a new type of cruiser called war hawks built he then sent seven war hawks into the neranda system in an attempt to gain favour with the Romulan people, the quick victory he sought was almost a disaster as the enterprise turned up during the attack which though was destroyed did manage to stop an attack on a federation colony world by destroying two of the ships, two had already been destroyed by another Romulan vessel. When the fleet returned Drulith was over thrown and admiral Narviak took over command he sent out orders that the Romulan were not to contact any race unless they crossed into Romulan space while he rebuilt the Romulan fleet.
