Clicking the XML just shows you what the city needs. Then you can just backspace over the XML and type in "ind" or "tra" (or whatever) or leave the simple ".com" to add population.
Just got a new work PC. Much faster than my old one. I'll take it for a spin around everyone's cities as soon as I get it set up.
