My LOST Theory…

Okay so maybe it isn’t so much of a “theory” as it is “wishful thinking” and I’m sure I’m going to get flamed to no end for this but here I go…

What if the Island’s mythology is caused by the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey! :D :D :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tycho_Magnetic_Anomaly_TMA-1

Think about all the connections:

- The Monoliths emit a powerful magnetic field similar to that which the Island emits
- The Monoliths produce powerful, directional radio transmissions such as those which drew Rousseau’s party to the Island
- The Monoliths are presented as being benevolent however they attempt to destroy humanity in 3001: The Final Odyssey to save the evolving Europan life; the DHARMA Initiative is attempting to change the variables in the Valenzetti Equation which predicts the exact time of the destruction of humanity
- The Monoliths all have the dimensions 1x4x9; the LOST numbers also hold significance
- The Monoliths can teleport; teleportation has been hinted at with Charlotte finding the DHARMA polar bear in Tunisia, Anthony Cooper arriving on the Island and Ben Linus winding up in the Sahara Desert in 2005
- David Bowman appears to Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2010: Odyssey Two such as various people appear to the inhabitants of the Island
- The Monoliths help evolve life to its fullest potential… hmm… 4-toed statue creatures to 5-toed modern humans?

Now I doubt a fully functional Monolith would cause all of the situations the Losties and Others have encountered, but perhaps a BROKEN Monolith, or perhaps one that is having its power used by someone (“Jacob,” Ben Linus, etc)? I’d love to see the series end with the Losties finding a Monolith somewhere on the Island (although I’m sure 90% of the viewers would be totally confused by this ending) :D

Just to be difficult......

If it was a monolith doing all this, then what about the one on the moon and the trip to Jupiter? Since we're saying monoliths are involved then we're taking the stories by Clarke into account right? Like Lost and 2001 take place in the same universe. Then 2001 (as in the book) would have TMA1 on the moon and a big space station in orbit and HAL computers around, and in the TV show it's 2004.

Difficult...? Do you really think that I would propose such a crazy silly theory without expecting at least a little criticism?

Hey, for all we know, those events haven't happened yet even if the universes of LOST and 2001 were combined. The quote below is from the 3001: The Final Odyssey Wikipedia entry:

"Additionally, some of the dates are changed. The USSR is acknowledged as having crumbled in 1991, whereas in the earlier three books it lasts well into the 21st century. Frank Poole's birth date is set at 1996; the Discovery mission is pushed forward to the 2030s and the Leonov mission to the 2040s, when in the earlier three books, they were in 2001 and 2010, respectively."

Hey man, this is MY theory... :p

...and besides, if you're right, if purgatory means hanging out with Emilie de Raven on a warm sunny beach, then I would love to see what HEAVEN looks like!
