My Little Pony web invasion?

MLP bronyism has hit meatspace. I just got back from the black friday sales and heard two store employees having a serious conversation for 15 minutes about the show and the word "brony" was used more than once. Both of these people were males in their 20s.

I fear for the future of the human race.

Brony seems to have two origin stories. The first is that /b/ over on 4chan pushed the meme as far as they could, calling themselves /b/ronies.

The second is that the term means "Bro Pony" due to the increasingly large number of older males getting interested in the show. The term "brony", however, applies to female fans of the show as well, though the alternate term "pegasister" is also used, but not nearly as popular.

"Brony" is the male equivalent. The female equivalent was "pegasister" (a play on pegasus and sister), but most female fans of the show prefer being called "Brony" as well, so it's becoming a gender neutral term that simply means one is a fan of the show.

I'm not going to say I'm normal because I know I'm not, but can we get a little perspective? If you are taking your morals as an adult, from a preschool cartoon show you are hardly exhibiting maturity. Which is funny because I've come to respect J's perspective and wisdom over the past few years. I can relate to at least two of the personal challenges he's shared with the board.

I can respect watching a kids show with a relative. But watching on your own? That's just weird.

I guess I'm just a cynic at the ripe old age of 27. That's not a good thing BTW.

Who said we're taking morals from it? We're entertained by it, which entirely different.

EDIT: Alright, I see J. implied that with his VeggieTales comment. Still, I wouldn't call that the main attraction, at least not for most of us watching MLP.

Well, I wouldn't say I get my morals from the series. I'm just commenting on the positivity in what the show advocates. I've said it before, but the show has a lack of cynicism, which is a very nice, refreshing change of pace. What someone says they are, they are, with few exceptions. So the morality and ethos displayed on the show is more like icing on an already tasty cake.

Now, I do watch the show alone. She's not over here as often as I'd like (she behaves so much like me it's not funny. Or well, it is funny. ). I enjoy the show, and the characters. They're very well written, and are generally more complex than what you'll usually find on television.

Well, that would change the characters themselves by bogging them down with lots of cynicism, hate, treachery, and everything else I find unappealing. That said, it would be interesting to see something like "Twilight Sparkle: Attorney-at-Law".

I could see that working. The Doctor is very positive, and cheerfully so, and I love his more off the wall approach to things (which is what got me into Doctor Who).

As an adult nearly twice your age, I enjoy a great variety of entertainment, including stuff ostensibly aimed at kids. Last night I watched the new Charlie Brown Special. I also watch stuff like Dr Seuss, Phineas and Ferb and Batman: Brave and the Bold-- as well as stuff like Kim Possible and Atomic Betty, which are ostensibly aimed at girls. There's no reason why adults can't appreciate kids' entertainment. There comes a time-- or should-- when people lose that teenage self-consciousness and realize that they can like whatever they want no matter what the lowest common denominator tells them they're supposed to like.

Sort of difficult to do, Celestia and Luna are co-reigning monarchs, apart from the mayors and ministers of the Equestrian colonies and cities, there is no government to base a show on.

Well I would love to see how Celestia is dealing with a now teenaged Luna throwing tantrums around Canterlot on a daily basis, having put up with 1500+years of crap from everything else she either has amazing patience or severe trollouts we never get to see
