My Lincoln Enterprises STAR TREK slides have faded

Forbin, I sent you a PM.

Like Christopher, I do like the magenta tones of some of the faded clips; kind of like the old sepia-toned photographs. But they restore pretty well, too. Here's a quick and dirty:

FYI, the results aren't quite as good with moderately compressed images such as this one.

I tried playing in Paint Shop Pro with the red, blue, and green levels and things only got more psychedelic, until I noticed a little something called "One Stop Photo Fix".

Here's what I got with one click...

I just discovered hitting the auto-adjust on Corel Photopaint does the same. Hm!

Maybe next time I have a week off I'll scan the whole bunch and fix 'em.

Good show! I'm not very familiar with either Paint Shop Pro or Corel Photopaint, but there's a similar function/tool in Photoshop (my workhorse) called Auto Color. It does a similar job.

It took me some time to get the hang of the Photoshop levels palette, and before I did, I used a Photoshop plug-in called ROC (restoration of color) available from Kodak: http://asf.com/products/plugins/roc/pluginROC/

This is a good tool and can do color corrections better than the Auto Color tool but not quite as good as doing it yourself manually with the levels palette. It is also easier to use than the levels palette. BTW, ROC sometimes comes as a freebie with film/transparency scanners.

What's more, if your slides have all faded about the same way (and I'd assume they would) you can spend as much time as you need fixing one of them, then use Photoshop's Batch feature to automatically perform the same actions on all the rest - it can be a bit tricky the first time round, but it's a great timesaver once set up. A little googlework will find you plenty of good tutorials.

Resurrecting an old thread of mine, I was playing around with some of those old Lincoln Enterprises film trims that I mounted into slides years ago. Specifically, I was looking for an NBC STAR TREK bumper screen, couldn't find any on the web that suited me, so I went about making my own. These were the images that would appear when the announcer would say "STAR TREK will return after station identification", or there would be a quick theme-music flourish to accompany the image.

Though they'd faded, I was able to correct the color to the best of my memory and came up with these three:

And I thought that by posting them here, others could enjoy them too.
