my idea for a new series.

lonewriter

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I'd like to see a series set in the JJverse, produced by JJ Abrams set aboard a Kelvin class ship called the USS Phoenix. It could be set after the movie. The captain could be a disgraced officer who is assigned an old ship to patrol and secure the "backwater" planets of the Federation where crime is rampant. The crew could be a bunch of rejects who are nearly drummed out of the Fleet. It could be something like Firefly meets Star Trek.

Other than that the full-on Firefly tone is too far afield for Trek now that it's in the delicate phase of being relaunched after years of mismanagement, your idea is pretty much in line with what I'd guess is the best way to get the franchise back on TV.

For the time being, Trek needs to take a conservative approach and build on its newly rediscovered strength. Plenty of time to experiment later.

I'm with lonewriter, except I'd have the ship be a freighter / tender dedicated to the C.o.E. One of Kaden's Pandora-Class freighter/tender would be perfect for this assignment. Not fast, or well-armored/well-armed but stout enough to handle the occasional "Oh crap!" moment.

Perhaps even a restored Phobos-Class starship (early 2380's) assigned to general surveillance of outlying Federation territories bordering the Klingon Empire, the Tholians, et al. Servicing subspace amplifiers or eliminating the U.F.P. & old United Earth Space Probe Agency's old petered-out space junk as radiation/navigation hazards, etc.

Interesting take. I think TPTB have this misconception that, for a series to be successful, the ship and crew need to be the flagship and the cream of the crop. Trek, traditionally, was set to tell current stories with a future twist. With the manner of current events, namely the economic conditions, this sort of story would be sweet. I think a whole lot fans could relate to a more rundown, older ship that is downsized and laking. I think the producers/ future producers need to think outside the box for any real future to the franchise.

I guess that's why I like DS9 so much. It's not on the flagship (TNG) or a state of the art just out of the factory ship (Voyager, Enterprise).
It would be nice to see what the rest of the fleet is doing, maybe this is why I've been hoping for a Titan series, TV movie or Direct to DVD.

All I've wanted for at least the last decade or so is a series set during TOS era, complete with mini-skirts, beehive hair-dos, Gorns, smooth headed Klingons and Kirk appearing via stock footage on the viewscreen. Use a pre-refit Miranda class design. Go to planets with wacky aliens and cultures.

That would be the dream.

But the notion that DS9 was on the ass-end of the universe was swept away pretty quickly when it became the focal point of a galactic war. People always prefer to think they're seeing a story about something important, not about a pack of nonentities. Even a "lesser" vessel would soon find itself in the middle of big things, and the characters would soon reveal themselves to be courageous, competent and smart, simply because who the hell wants to see a bunch of clowns in space? For comedy, okay, but Star Trek is not principally comic.
