My Idea for a new series

What about a series going from 2063-2121, from the Phoenix flight to the chartering of Earth Starfleet.

Or a series set on a freighter, like the Even Odds from the DS9R.

A Trek series set in another galaxy

Or yes, like DS9 but with a new race. Science Starship X travels to a world which has just achieved warp flight and stays to help the people on that planet, like the ENT Vulcans did to us, but told from the aliens' POV.

Or a science ship that finds ruins of an ancient civilisation and stays to explore...then we get episodes about the ancient civilisation introduced by the Starfleet crew, like their watching a video or something.

The possibilities are endless, but the suits have to give the show a chance to find its feet otherwise it's dead in the water no matter what it's about.

An idea for a new Trek series…

It’s the year 2712; practically all of the species of our galaxy have unified under one governmental structure: Human, Borg, Dominion, Cardasian, Ferengi and even Romulan to mention a few. It’s still the Federation but not the Federation. The species of the galaxy have evolved, giving us new extraordinary capabilities, challenges, conflicts and technology. Humans are on the cusp of an evolutionary transfiguration…. The sixth sense has arrived, and on its tail – wonder, experimentation, panic, revolt, and a strong Q Continuum curiosity. The people of Tau Alpha C, who are able to remove themselves from space/time with thought, try and bring organization and direction to a rising chaotic galactic society… A familiar face is among them… Wesley Crusher – now a master of thought over space/time and propulsion – a key player because… Starfleet has a new enemy…

Starfleet has built an outpost on the edge of the galaxy to defend against a new enemy; one from another galaxy; a ruthless near omnipotent enemy that travels from galaxy to galaxy instantly via powers of the mind… A mysterious dark relative of the Q. The outpost is built on an asteroid on the outer belt of the M-85 binary solar system… The front line… the very edge of the galaxy where stars and neighboring asteroids are visible on one side, and an absolute void occupies the other.

The outpost is lead by a human Starfleet admiral; a battle worn hero, wise, strong and determined. The first officer and adjutant to the admiral is Borg, a technological wonder, intelligent, independent but linked to a new evolved and ethical Borg collective. The security officer is an iron-fisted Jem Ha’Dar; a race now free and the chief engineer is a stunning Cardasian female. Starfeet now consists of a strongly bound conglomeration of Human, Borg, Dominion and Romulan cultures and technologies.

The outpost is built of transparent aluminum interconnected domes but is dark, dingy, battle worn and just down right eerie. The civilians that frequent it are the riff-raff of the galaxy. The only place to relax is a dive bar owned by an outcast Klingon who is rough, mysterious but surprisingly talented in the social graces.

The flagship, a trans-warp marvel of Human, Borg and Romulan technologies leads a fleet of hundreds strong stationed at the outpost. But the real battle is not to be fought with starships as much as it will be fought in the mind, and Starfleet is in a desperate rush to develop a new weapon; a weapon to attack the mind of the enemy, a weapon that they are willing to do anything to acquire….

I feel that Deep Space 9 was brilliant, the peak of Star Trek’s success, and a new Star Trek series will need to build on that success. It must continue to be a character driven show that excites the human passion for exploration. That’s what makes me sit in front of the TV and watch Trek. Let’s continue to creatively expand the Star Trek universe, and not re-hash it with prequels. As Q said in the last episode and scene of TNG: “I’ll see you…. Out there!”

Comments, thoughts?

Wow, stop right there! How the frak do the Borg play nice within the Federation when their entire species goal is to assimilate others?

I'd also argue that the Dominion and the Romulans cannot retain their cultural and political identity while being a meaningful part of the Federation. The Romulans use xenophobia like the Vulcan use logic, to overcome the violent emotional impulses that would otherwise prevent them from having a coherent society. The Dominion is a theocracy.

There's an interesting story in there - if the Federation started to include members that were at odds with presumed Federation values, how do they maintain this situation? And for the Borg, Dominion and Romulans to fully embrace Federation values would rob them of what defines them, so that's cheating - they are no longer meaningfully Borg, Dominion or Romulans.

That's a tough scenario to envision but worth exploring. Would the Federation be the entity that is compromised, in order to secure peace? Would they allow the Borg to "eat" some sacrifical worlds to keep them from being a larger nuisance?
new evolved and ethical Borg collective
Ethical by whose standards? Forced assimilation is ethical for them. If they're not assimilating other beings against their will, they've stopped being Borg by any meaningful definition. Removing what is interesting about these species isn't the way to write a good story. Stick with what defines these species and shape a story around that.

Temis, thanks for your input. You make some good points. And for the most part, we’re on the same page. Notice that I mentioned that “It’s still the Federation but not the Federation”. The races of the galaxy have united due to a new common foe, but are struggling to combine their cultures. Trek has always been good at weaving several strong sub-plots into the overall story. That keeps their story lines dynamic, intelligent and intriguing. With that said; Yes, there is strife between the cultures; major ones …And yes, the Federation would be the entity that is compromised in order to secure the peace …but in the end, will come up on top… to everyone’s benefit… as always. Again, thanks for your input.
