My Hero - Don't talk in the theater...or else!

Well, I don't think he was trying to kill the guy, just shoot him. So his aim was probably spot on (part of why I think attempted murder charges are a bit much).

Maybe in Australia it is a bit different as it is summer here. We can go outside for a game of cricket, or a drive to the beach, or have an evening barbeque, or just relax in the garden watching the sunset etc
Could be the weather.

As Trekker said, by the time night roles around, all the cooking, present-opening, and cleaning has already been done. For some reason my family (and I suspect other families) eat holiday dinners earlier in the day than normal. We had Christmas "dinner" at 2 in the afternoon. We were done eating and visiting by 4pm.

We discussed going to the movies, but there was nothing any of us really wanted to see.

For my family, Christmas is done and over by 6pm.

Unless he is the great great great great grandson of Annie Oakley his aim sucked.

You have to be some kind of cunt to shoot someone just for talking at the movies.

You also have to be some kind of cunt to think TALKING AT THE MOVIES is a crime worthy of getting shot for.

I hope they throw the book at the shooter and he goes down for a long time.

Hmm I have to wonder how many more theaters will become quite now. Societal benefit?

It didn't exactly make big headlines. Most people probably didn't notice or are apathetic to it. So I'd say no difference.

It's a pretty common practice, especially with families who just want to relax and not make anyone at home work to entertain/feed them. For a couple of hours, it's a nice change of pace for them.

But it is something one can do nearly every day of the year, or at least some weekends if the adults work.

And if everyone pitches in with the meal at home on Christmas Day it isn't really a chore.

The thing most people run into Christmas night is that you've eaten, opened presents, the kitchen is clean... so now what? There's nothing good on TV, all the catching up and chatter has been done over the course of the day and past days when everyone got into town, etc. So people go to the movies because it's pretty much the only other thing aside from gas stations that are open on X-Mas night.

It's done to get out of the house -as a group- and do something aside from sitting around the fire listening to grandpa's bunion surgery story again.

You should also keep in mind that non-Christians need to be entertained. It's practically a jewish tradition to go to the movies and eat chinese food on Christmas (at least, around here).

I dunno how effective this is. Wouldn't shooting someone cause more movie disruption? Like screaming people and cops being called in and whatnot? You shoot one person, you have to shoot them all.

I'd read about this and glad to see a post here too.

I agree with those who are questioning the use of a gun for this. I do feel that the death penalty should absolutely apply to anyone who chooses to talk during a movie.

I also fail to understand why anyone is referring to the bastard who could not control himself and shut the fuck up as a "victim" ... He is not a "victim" at all. If he can't control himself, he should be executed by any means necessary.

Shooting may have been just a tad overkill, but the basic fact is that there is no logical reason anybody in a theater should make a sound of any kind. Their obligation as theater patrons is to shut the fuck up and watch. That's it. That's all they should be allowed to do. Managers should be able to throw them out if they say ONE WORD.

I am sort of surprised that anyone would want to go to the cinema on Christmas Day - don't they have anything better to do?

I can't imagine that the cinema could have been very crowded on Charistmas Day so why didn't the man just change his seat?

I wonder how old the son was? If he was a child he will be likely to very traumatised and I think it is sad that anyone would find that acceptable or funny.

EDITED TO ADD - The victim was 31 years old so I think we can assume that his son was definitely a child.

yeah, pretty horrific for the kid :( ::shudder::

btw, tons of people go to the movies on christmas day. we did. we went to see Valkyrie and we had to go have dinner at 5pm (at a Chinese restaurant -- only one open) after we got to the theatre and the 4:45 show was packed -- PACKED -- to the gills. the manager changed our tix to the 7:45 show, which was also packed. however, we'd wised up and gotten to our seats by 7. by 7:20, the place was full.

The place was packed to the gills, twice, for a Crazy Cruise movie? Really?

Normal people still love Tom Cruise.

What an idiot! Doesn't the moron gunman know that there's a shitload of talking during movie night in prison?

Edited for unnecessary expletiveYou have to be some kind of c*** to shoot someone just for talking at the movies.

Was that actually required for you to adequately express your opinion?

While I may disagree with him shooting the guy, I can definitely relate... hell, if I was dumb enough to carry a loaded weapon clipped to my jeans (I'm sorry, sweatpants!? Bwahahahahaaaaaa :guffaw:) I'm sure the temptation to shoot the cretins myself would be almost irresistable.
