My first voyage with Voyager

You Will Fail: Mulgrew said in an interview that it was a constant challenge for her to play Janeway. Every day, she told herself she'd crack it, and every day she didn't.

I can't see anyone doing better than her, though. Her character was written with some very unique mannerisms which one couldn't duplicate naturally unless they had those mannerisms themselves. I think just about any actor would have struggled with it.

So is it time for the Janeway admirers to form a circle around Qutluch chanting "One of us! One of us!" yet? :)

Glad that you're liking the show. I thought that Chakotay had shown his bundle to B"Elanna, too (that sounds so dirty). And for the most part I'm not a huge fan of the holodeck on VOY, but you put it into a different perspective.

Back to why I like Kate Mulgrew as an actress...

A lot of what she does feels perfectly scaled to TV. Like in the clip where she's telling Tuvok the story about Kim's mom calling, asking if she could ship him his clarinet, and she does that little head shake just before she says no. It gives the sense that Janeway has a ton of energy and can't get the words out as quickly as she's thinking them--she's a little volatile. It's far different from Picard, who usually seems so measured. Well, except for that weird cough thing in "The Naked Now."

To me part of the issue with Janeway is not so much how Mulgrew potrayed her but how she was written. An Actor has to more or less work with the material provided to them.

I like your watching thread, mostly be cause I just started watching Voyager too, and I agree with just about everything you've said.

I like Mulgrews acting. It might not be very 'natural', but it's pretty boring watching people talk in real life, a few flourishes and little things like that really add to the scene.

She does very interesting things with her hands. A lot.

Thanks for the clip Gov. Kodos. I see that Mulgrew eventually cuts her hair short. I'm not that far in the series yet, but I'm not sure if I am going to like that better or not.

It's Janeway Time

For anyone interested in the haircut that PRECEEDED the bun... look at 0:41 seconds(Pic with Chak in the background) of Gov Kodos' last vid. THAT was what we had before TPTB decided to RESHOOT a significant portion of the pilot with a different hairdo.

I actually liked it... but I wonder if TPTB thought she looked "too" normal i.e. "too" young?

I like it better than the bun.

And in a case of life imitating art, there's this. Yesterday I was interviewed for a Q&A in my subject area. The guy directing at one point was coaching me to me a little more emphatic in my answers, and when I was answering a question, he suggested that I shake my head slightly before talking. After that, I was having a ball. I resisted the urge to break out the Dismissive Hand Wave, and I regretted that I didn't have an opportunity to do the Janeway Death Grimace, but I got a chance to do a lot of the things that I was talking about in here yesterday morning.

Thankfully, touching wasn't one of them.

JanewayRulez, I like the pre-bun hair a lot! And the Chakotay in the background...

Shatnertage
, it seems Janeway has woven her way into your psyche so deeply, that you are more comfortable when you use mannerisms you learned from her.

Qutluch, I'm enjoying reading your thoughts on VOY. I can't wait to do an official re-watch of the series, after I finish my DS9 re-watch.

This is the only other pilot-hair shot I've seen:

Why are we so fascinated with her hair? :vulcan:

 Granted.

Still, could have been this. And then all the fun we'd have missed...

Not VOY related, but I'm in Michigan right now visiting family and the movie: Star Trek First Contact is on and I made my mom stop to watch it. Love the movie! Data is hysterical in it, and my mom's reaction to Star Trek without Shatner is too funny! She has never seen the newer shows and couldn't believe they kept going with out Shatner...

You should watch it together. With wine and tissues.

As to the bun, I started watching VOY a day after I finished DS9. I remember being completely smitten with the bun and thinking "wow she looks like Katerine Hepburn!" I found it very commanding and sexy. I'm glad they reshot because she stands out and looks like she means business right from the start with the bun. Sort of set her apart with a different kind of feminine look than a lot of Trek had in the past.

I do like the bun. It looks very professional; like she means business. However, it is nice to see her with her hair down in her private quarters; she seems more personable.
