My first live viewing of Doctor Who

Demonland

So it's only taken 34 years but it's finally going to happen. No more watching it the next day, week, months or years late. Tonight I will be watching the show live from London. I arrived here yesterday morning after a grueling 13 and 1/2 hour journey from Singapore (spent 2 days there to break up the 7 hour flight from Melbourne).

Spent the day walking the streets of London marvelling at the iconic sites of those quaint red telephone boxes (which I always thought would make a good alt TARDIS), double decker buses and the red post boxes. Can't wait to see the sites of this wonderful city.

Was in Harrods yesterday and I made a beeline with my daughter to the toy department and marvelled at the amount, availability and low price (compared to eBay) of the Doctor Who action figures. You damn spoilt Brits. :p

So tonight I will watch my favourite TV show live and I am very excited. My wife thinks I am a little too excited but I suppose I deserve to be rewarded for all the clothing stores I have to wander through.

So - will you be watching on a decent sized TV, or one of those little ones you get in hotel rooms?

You know what - I still get a thrill from watching it live, even though I've been doing so for well over 30 years...

:D

The only time I've ever done that was during an ep of Trial of a Time Lord when I was in the UK in 1986.

Well, that and when New Zealand showed Silver Nemesis before the UK two years later! :)

I was in England in 2007 when "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood" aired, and I was so excited... only to discover the girl I was staying with had never been able to get her TV to pick anything up! We ended up, ah, acquiring the episodes and connecting my laptop to the television, which for some reason displayed the output in black and white. I had a better experience watching them in the States!

Hmm. Obviously "live" has different meaning in some parts of the world considering the episode you'll be watching was filmed several months ago and Doctor Who has never been broadcast "live". ;)

Seriously though, I envy you. You're in London, England. That's on my list of things to do before I die. Have a great time!

^You probably needed to set the output for PAL, or change the TV to S-Video to get it to display in colour.

I'm going to miss it tonight because I'm going to a Jimmy Carr gig but it's recording anyway.

I won't be missing tonight's broadcast thankfully. I have had to wait to watch both Flesh and Stone and Cold Blood as I was away camping and I also missed the Lodger first time around last week as I was at my Grandmothers so watched it on BBC3 on Sunday. And I missed Day four and five of Children of Earth last year because I was on camp again!

Will you be here next week Demonland?

Unfortunately no. That's not to say I'm complaining as we're off to a wedding in Italy, then the Greek Islands and then Paris before breaking up the long journey back by stopping for 3 days in Hong Kong.

I will not be missing the finale though as I can connect to my computer at home using an app on the ipad where I can then log into the the time vortex and acquire the episode via usual means. I then have another app that logs into my computer and is able to stream video on my home computers HD directly to the ipad. We are staying in an awesome hotel in Mykonos (Greek Islands) with the inlaws (on their shout mind you) and they have free high speed wireless. Gotta love technology. Welcome to the future.

Saw my first TARDIS today. Went to Earls Court station and had a photo with the one outside there. It was a beautiful site to behold. I was imagining the creapy music playing from School Reunion when Sarah Jane saw the TARDIS. I'll post photos later.

Due to the time difference, I downloaded the torrent and started watching it before it aired here on "Space". Guess I'll have to wait until the next time i go to England to see it "live".

I refuse to watch the edited version on ethical grounds. Same goes for top gear. :)

I've had trips like that before and they're always fun. I was in Glasgow for my first "live" viewing of Doctor Who. Had been to the UK multiple times before but never during a broadcast of Doctor Who. Caught the Daleks in Manhattan there. Yeah, not the best but still cool to see live!

Where are you staying at in Mykonos. I've been there multiple times, fun place!
