(From Jane's Historical Spacecraft, 10th ed, 2444)
"The DY series spacescraft served the NASA program with distinction throughout the latter decade of the 20th century and into the 21st. Nearly all of the famous interplanetary and early deep space missions undertaken by NASA utilized one configuation or another of the DY series.
"One of the most (in)famous of the DY series ships, however, is not known for exploration or science, but rather as the escape vessel for one of the most ruthless tyrants Earth ever knew.
"At the end of the Eugenics Wars in 1996, Khan Noonien Singh and some 93 of the so-called 'supermen', escaped justice in 1996 by stealing and launching a DY-100 class ship, which they named the SS Botany Bay (originally designated the SS Endeavor by NASA) equipped with advanced cryosleep systems..."

"Just over two and a half centuries later (in 2264), the Botany Bay was discovered adrift in interstellar space by the Federation Starship USS Enterprise under the command of Capt James T. Kirk.
"The discovery nearly cost Kirk and crew their ship, as Khan quickly devised a plan to take over the Enterprise, and nearly succeeded with the aid of a convert among Kirk's crew. Ultimately, however, Kirk was able to regain control of his ship.
"The ultimate fate of Khan and the other 'supermen' remains classfied by Starfleet Command, though in the late 2280s, there were rumors that a still-living Khan was somehow involved in the Genesis Incident.

"The basic design of the DY series proved so successful that it survived well into the 23rd century, where DY class ships, often converted to automation, were equipped with low-yeild warp drives for use as short-range cargo haulers, among other purposes."

"One of the latter varients of the DY series, the DY-750, was selected as the class to begin man's attempts at penetrating extra-solar space. The first two attempts did not yeild the results expected, and the February 7, 2038 loss of the final ship assigned to the program, the Charybdis, put an end to the program, already struggling to keep it's funding due to mounting political and economic pressures."
