My dryer stopped working!

My first inclination would be a problem with the magnetic lock-out for the door and jamb see that it is still there on both ends, is unobstructed and makes a good connection. Dryers don't run with the door open.

Next thought is an electrical connection in the UI system is broken. Final thought would be a problem with the drying mechanism itself.

At this point, call your landlord. See if he'll do something in the next day or so.

Also, take any clothes in the wash out and either hang them up or lay them out to dry. Don't leave them in.

I actually work at a school that teaches HVAC and appliance repair, so I might bug some of the guys there and see if they can take a look at it. It's Sunday, so I know my landlord won't be able to do anything until tomorrow anyway. I'm not too worried about it. Luckily, I managed to get all my other clothes washed before this happened.

I might end up taking the current load to the laundromat to get them dry.

I don't normally do it this way, and I swear I used to own another set of sheets, but I can't figure out where the hell they are.

Sheet thieves. They are a real problem sometimes.

Dry them without the help of a dryer! Get a line and hang your laundry someplace!

I've never had a dryer, nor do i want one. The concept is baffling to me.. nature and physics will dry my clothes on their own if left out in the open.

Why waste energy and buy an appliance when i can avoid all that with a little pre-planning so i don't have to wash all my clothes at the same time. Yes.. a dryer is faster but it also puts a strain on the clothes (so i've heard) and i can avoid all that.

During the summer high heat times my clothes dry within an afternoon if i put them on the balcony.

^ I very much agree. On the other hand, in some places you can't really dry your clothes outside due to the cold, rain, or pollution. So I guess a dryer could be useful in that kind of weather. But as with anything, it's easy to overuse it.

I still check the magnetic latch between the door and its jamb, I'm betting the problem is in there either one of the magnets is missing, obstructed or the connection isn't beinmg made when the door is closed.

I literally don't have anywhere I could possibly put my clothes to dry them short of laying them out all over the floor in my house.

Again, clothes lines are not even remotely common around here. I can't remember the last time I saw one. I think it was at my old house...about 20 years ago.

If it's not the breaker it could be some internal component of the dryer which really shouldn't be too expensive to fix since dryers are basically just a motor and a heating unit.

I wouldn't be too sure about this.

My last vacuum cleaner stopped working. I hotwired the motor to check and it worked. It had 4 or 5 circuit boards in it, any one of which was around $50, which was like 2/3 of the cost of a new vacuum. And it could have been 1 of 2 boards stopping the motor from working.

Similar thing with my Mom's last oven. All the top coils stopped working and they were controlled by electronics (the whole thing actually). It would have been 3/4 the cost of a new unit to have it fixed.

Whatever happened to simple appliances?

As far as drying, you could hang stuff over the shower rod, with most of it on the tub side.

I'm not really worried about drying stuff. I managed to do all my laundry yesterday before this last load that busted my dryer. That's why it's so confusing to me, because the dryer was working perfectly just 45 minutes earlier.

You have a house (or is that an euphemism for an appartment, maybe only a 1 room appartment?) and you don't have a place you could put one of these in for a day at most?

Hard to believe.. i have a two room appartment with a kitchen and a small balcony.. i own a stand like one of these in the link and i can put it anywhere in my appartment.. kitchen, living room the balcony if the weather is ok.

Doesn't cost much too.. i paid 10 Euro for mine (about 15$?).

Seems pretty wasteful to me to spend money on something like that to use "for a day at most."

My dryer barely costs me any money to use, and whatever the cost to fix/replace will fall on my landlord, so I'll just wait it out. I'm hardly stressing about this.

How much energy does your dryer use up each use? I bet that after a while my "solution" will be cheaper

In the long run, sure, but I am willing to pay for the convenience of the dryer. When I do laundry, I do a LOT of laundry, usually 3-4 large loads in the span of a few hours. One little drying rack would simply not suffice.

I had a great idea to start hanging my some of my laundry in my yard a few years ago, and my dogs went completely ape shit over this.

They couldn't figure out what those giant fluttering monsters flying around my yard were. And when I finally carried them over and "introduced them" to the laundry, it suddenly became a game to try and rip everything down from the line.

Stupid animals.

^Yeah, animals are another reason I really don't want to put my clothes outside. We already have raccoons that scatter trash all over the yard. I don't want to see what would happen if they got a hold of my laundry!
